Prodyne 2.5-Quart Pitcher On Ice
Why Is No One Listening to the Consumers?
We liked this the first three times we used it. Then, the fourth time, the ice tube cracked and now our fancy pitcher with the ice tube core is no good to us. They need to find a way to stop the tube from breaking or quit selling the pitcher - one or the other. I am not a happy camper with BB&B. Obviously they have been made aware of the problem as long as two years ago according to the reviews and are still selling these pitchers. Not cool, BB&B....not at all cool...........

The idea and intended use of this pitcher was great, however, it was a real disappointment when the ice core cracked upon the first use. The plastic pitcher itself is sturdy and is great for outdoor use. The advertisement of the item touted the ice core, but it is the one piece that failed! The product does not live up to its advertisement. I am extremely disappointed that no replacement part can be found ANYWHERE! If anyone finds one, please post it. Bed Bath and Beyond should discontinue selling this item.

2.5 quart acrylic pitcher with ice insert $19.99
I purchased the clear, acrylic pitcher, after seeing them used on a cruise. I did not use the pitcher for quite awhile, after the purchase but finally did, a week ago. I was so disappointed that it came apart while freezing. After reading all of the reviews, I see there is a list of consumers with the same problem. I do think I filled above the fill line, not sure. I am requesting to purchase, from Bed Bath and Beyond, the inserts. I am hoping that I can buy those separate, as I do love the acrylic pitcher and the whole idea of keeping a pitcher beverages cold and not diluting the liquid.

I received this pitcher as part of a wedding present and have used it multiple times. We love it! I agree with the review below: you have to freeze the inner tube on it's side. We have probably used it about 10 times and haven't experienced any problems. It definitely helps to keep beverages cooler and you can leave them out for guests longer! Truly enjoy it!

There's a trick to this...
Despite the reviews, I decided to purchase this item and fill the central column with ice cubes as someone suggested. I found, however, the freezer core is filled through a tiny 3/8-inch hole in the top, and sealed with a silicone plug. Also, the directions specifically state "Fill Ice Tube with water to fill line and replace plug". Good theory, just not the right one.
However, I came up with another idea. I filled to the fill line as directed, but placed the tube ON ITS SIDE in the freezer. The resulting long air bubble serves as a strategic expansion strip along the full length of the freezer core, vs. a rather useless air gap at the top of the column. Just enough free plastic to accomodate the sideways expansion of the ice core.
I have put the unit through its duty cycle 4x times now, and it has survived perfectly intact. This includes rapid immersion of the freezer core into a pitcher filled with lukewarm, not pre-chilled liquid.
I don't know how others have been freezing the core, but if they have been fixturing it in an upright vertical position I can definitely see a problem. Note that the instructions say nothing about freezing orientation, so they shouldn't feel bad. If any other brave souls decide to test my theory, please let us know how it works out.

Don't freeze it...
Yes water expands when frozen. In all directions. Not just 'upward'. Leaving 2" of space won't resolve the issue.
I don't believe you are meant to 'fill it with water then place it in the freezer'. You are breaking the product. Do this with any glass and then drop it into a pitcher of water and it will pop. Even if the core doesn't break while in the freezer, the instant temperature change when you drop it in the pitcher will.
Fill the core with ice when you prepare the pitcher.

I bought this pitcher because of the insert. Have used it only once and the insert split. I was very disappointed. I followed the instructions so I could not imagine what went wrong. This pitcher is too expensive for it to not do what is expected. If the same pitcher was sold at a cheaper price and without the insert I would recommend buying it. Otherwise not a wise choice.
