USE YOUR BRAINS
The product was fine. It is plastic, so if you plan on leaving it out during the winter season, OF COURSE THE WATER MIXED WITH THE SAND IN THE BASE WILL FREEZE AND THEREFORE EXPAND AND CRACK THE PLASTIC BASE. I removed the sand cleaned and stored outside in freezing weather, and they are PERFECT this season. The base is made of 4 inter-locking trays, so even if you want to move it, it is simple to take apart to move to another location, even with the sand filled in each tray.

Didn't hold up like we hoped
Our lid blew off and then cracked when we got a strong wind. Once it was cracked, water got in the base then froze. The freezing water cracked each bottom base. We haven't had it a year and will need to replace it already. I'm looking for a new style stand now.

Base twist together posts are very frail, twisted three off before the wing nuts were even close to tight., there is no manufacturer info on the instruction sheet to get in touch with them to get new pieces.

Works perfect!
I almost didnt buy this because of that first review but I did anyway, I couldnt imagine Bed Bath and Beyond selling a stand specific to an umbrella that didnt work. It just didnt add up. Since the store has a great return policy I figured I would try.
The base does work with the umbrella. My guess is the reviewer didn't setup the umbrella correctly. You can install the umbrella in two different ways. One to use with this stand and a different way if you dont have this stand.
I used 2 bags of play sand from Home Depot. I recommend you install it exactly where you are going to use it because it will be really hard to move after you fill it with sand.
The only reason I have it 1 4/5 is because I would have maybe liked to see the base with some kind of feature to make it easy to move. Maybe some wheels you can lock.
