There are a few must-haves in the kitchen, including a fire extinguisher, smoke detector, pot holders, thermometers and a first aid kit. These items should be easily accessible and kept out of children's reach.

Be sure to read the instructions for appliances like your blender, food processor, indoor grill and microwave. Refer to the owner's manual for proper cleaning and handling. When using a microwave, only use glass or glass-ceramic cookware and other containers that are labeled microwave safe. Do not use metal or aluminum foil containers, margarine tubs, restaurant take-out cartons or Styrofoam. Be sure to heat food evenly by stirring and rotating it. This is important, because bacteria can remain in cold spots. Take care not to overheat liquids or foods to reduce the risk of burns.

  • Considering the potential for serious burns or cuts from sharp utensils, always have a first aid kit handy. You can buy one from your local pharmacy or from the American Red Cross.
