Sadly disappointed
After 15 years of faithful service my KitchenAid Classic bit the dust. To replace this wonderful mixer I decided to stay with KitchenAid & upgrade the power a bit with the Artisan Design mixer.
It arrived relatively quickly & the boxes were in good shape. The mixer is a beautiful shiny blue. The glass bowl is huge & quite sturdy. Unfortunately, this is where my praise of this machine ends.
The motor is severely anemic. Sure, it mixes pancake batter with relative ease, but I haven't had much luck with anything that has more substance. I tried making pizza dough from the recipe in the book that was included with the mixer. Once the ingredients were incorporated & became thicker the mixer head began bouncing up and down with every turn. Within seconds the head began bouncing enough that the locking mechanism unlocked itself & the head popped up to almost a fully raised position. I then lowered the head & locked it again to see if the unlocking was simply a fluke. Nope, it did it again....repeatedly.
Needless to say, I am sorely disappointed with this machine. My next step is too check out BB&B's return policy, or find someone who wants a 3 month old machine that has been used twice, & who wants it only to mix pancake batter :(

Mixer sent up smoke
I used my brand new Kitchen Aid 5 qt. mixer for the second time this morning. Just as I was finished smoke started coming out of the top and the housing was HOT to the touch. The cord & plug were not hot. Thank goodness it didn't burst into flames and burn my kitchen. I'm really mad and disappointed with this mixer. I will take it back today after I clean the paddles and exchange it for another - perhaps even another brand. At this moment I cannot recommend this mixer, although this particular one might be defective. What are the chances of getting 2 bad ones?
