Great machine
This machine gives you a pop of color for the kitchen and makes a great cup of espresso. I had an espresso machine that was half the price...what a difference in the taste of the coffee. I haven't had any problems and the machine is very easy to use. The only slightly annoying thing is the water reserve is really small, but understandable as it is a compact machine. Overall, highly recommend for daily use.

Nice design, good espresso with some reservations
Looks terrific and takes pods as well as ground coffee--a difficult combination to find. I favor fresh ground coffee but was surprised by the quality, convenience, and easy clean up of the Espressione pods I've been trying. Tamping directions are minimal so I haven't found the right proportions yet to produce enough crema using ground coffee, but even without the crema the coffee from ground espresso tastes great. I don't like the tank, even though most machines use one like this. When you remove it some water can come out of the plastic tube attached to the machine and spill over the area where the electric cord comes out. Also the instruction manual is somewhat incomplete and inaccurate, apparently because it was written before modifications were made to the machine.
Here are some hints based on my own trial and error and provided by the very helpful manufacturer: 1) You can clean the pod holder by removing the filter--it does come out, but this isn't mentioned in the directions (although the directions do illustrate how to take the ground coffee holder apart). 2) The steamer rod does not unscrew for cleaning as indicated in the directions. It pulls out from just below the rubber "handle." 3) The directions are reversed re: how to turn the machine on and off. 4) Use the plastic part with two spouts that comes with the ground coffee holder: it is not mentioned or pictured in the directions, but should be inserted. 5) Add water to taste (1 1/2 - 3 ozs seems to be the range for an espresso) then manually turn the water off--the machine won't do this automatically. 6) If using grounds, make certain they are spread evenly in the basket or water will not come out of the spouts in the same amount...no problem if making one cup, but a problem if making two cups.
Don't be put off by the unrevised instructions. The Cafe Retro is really fun to look at and use, is easy to clean, gives you the option of pods or ground coffee, and can make a really good espresso.

Best Decision Ever
I was interested in an espresso machine that was easy to use, without compromising quality! I was close to buying another kind at Macy's but I am glad I waited!!!! I use the Espressione Cafe Retro on a daily basis to make an exceptional espresso! Pulls a perfect shot! Of course you have to play with the grind of the coffee but this machine couldn't be easier to use. The design also goes goes great with the contemporary decor in my apartment! Looks, quality and a great price!!! Can't go wrong with this machine. I also recommend the ESE pods by Espressione
