I called Kitchenaid Cust Svc. re: oxidation
I have a 9 yr. old Kitchenaid Classic mixer whose wire whisk attachment has also turned black at the top base. It gets black marks all over my hands and it cannot be cleaned. (The aluminum wires of the whisk have held up just fine.)
When I read the review above, I called Kitchenaid Cust Svc and asked them about it. The woman was very helpful, and told me the metal has oxidized from many cycles in the dishwasher. She told me they recommend that all attachments be hand-washed. I've been dishwashing the parts for 9 years, so I'll be hand-washing the new one! Hope this helps. :-)

Really Bad Quality
I have had a Kitchen Aid mixer for about 20 years and I love it. I bought one each for my daughter and my daughter-in-law last year and I am horribly disappointed. The wire whip which came with each mixer is made of a VERY INFERIOR MATERIAL which turns black (whether you wash it by hand as directed or put it in the dishwasher) and rubs off on anything it touches (your hands, dishtowels, food, anything). I ordered this one HOPING TO REPLACE THE CHEAP, INFERIOR ONE THAT CAME WITH THE MIXER BUT THIS ONE IS MADE OF THE SAME LOUSY MATERIALS AS THE ONE THAT CAME WITH THE MIXERS. DO NOT BUY THIS ATTACHMENT UNTIL Kitchenaid STARTS MAKING THEM OF THE ORIGINAL MATERIALS OR YOU WILL BE SORRY. This one is going back immediately.

Fantistic Experience
I have had my Kitchenaid Mixer for almost 30 years and this is the first time I needed something. Of course this happens in the middle of making my Christmas cookies. The one wires of the wire whip broke off and dough was going everywhere. In desperation I ordered the wire whip on line and to my surprise it arrived in time for me to finish cookies before Christmas. FAST DELIVERY!!!
