Beautiful and sharp, but not true damascus steel
This knife's unique handle is something you will either love or hate. Because of the taper from the heel to the handle, I love being able to pinch-cut using part of the blade and part of the handle--this lets you use your wrist to apply more pressure along the length of the handle for cutting that requires more pressure.
It is a beautiful knife that appears to have the patterned effect of a damascus blade, but the pattern scratches off, which would lead me to believe it is etched, not true damascus. Take that for what it's worth.
I haven't had the knife long enough to see the kind of pitting or rusting that other users describe, but I have read enough reviews to know that this happens easily to this entire series of katana knives if not immediately washed and dried.
Overall, a beautiful knife, but perhaps shun would be a better company if you are willing to forgo the damascus-look and spend a little more.

Worth It
Pricey but worth every penny. Check out their outlet mall in person to see if they are still carrying the 8 piece Katana knife block set for $249

At this moment, you are not thinking about the distinctive pattern of 33 stainless steel layers, the perfect balance of comfort and control, or the ultra sharp blade edge. All you are thinking about is the sound you hear when metal meets wood. Katana Series cutlery from Calphalon. Look sharp. |
