No one "ran this up the flagpole".
First, if your dog has fur (like a shihtzu) rather than being smooth (like a boxer), spend a few more dollars and get a more powerful direct drive clipper. But that's not Wahl's fault.
Wahl is clearly at fault for terrible printed instructions, and the simply insufficient DVD tutorial. For example, no indication if the length embossed on each comb means length of fur removed, or length of fur remaining on the dog. At least as bad, is the operation of the on-off switch. You can take your time turning ON a motorized tool, but when you want to turn one OFF you want to do it in the easiest, quickest, most ergonomic, intuitive way possible.. The power switch on this Wahl operates "against" all of these parameters.
