You can select the bagel function to reduce the power on one side of the heating elements by up to 50% so it will gently brown the bottom of the bagel while toasting the side that's sliced. There's even a defrost button so frozen pastries can be toasted to perfection in just minutes, and the reheat button quickly reheats toasted food in under a minute.
