Not built like they once where.
I have the 2008 version of the Dyson. It is built like a tank. Around Christmas this year I decided it was time for an upgrade on the old Dyson. I figured they could only get better with time. Well sadly I was wrong. The new Dyson DC41 seems to have the same great suction, but build quality is very poor. The engineering looks like it should be better but it doesn't come close. I guess big business drives big profit. Which equals cheaply made products. My old Dyson was a tank, the new one is a tinker toy. All the plastic parts are thin and seem to be of lesser quality. The upright lock mechanism is just weird. You have to push the handle up and past where you think it should be to lock it upright, but then when you go to transport it to a new area, it sometime comes unlocked by pulling back on the hand to activate the wheels. I'm not a big fan of the ball but that may just be my opinion. I'm sure some people like this about the vacuum. The wand is strange due to the way it locks in the back of the unit. You have to spend to much time lining up two parts to lock it into place. nothing like the old tried and true Dyson design. And the worse part is you need another vacuum cleaner to fully clean this vacuum. When you take it a part you will see an area that gets caked up with fine dust. Dyson warns against taking this apart or getting it wet. Well you can't completely clean the vacuum of pet smell if you can't clean this area. So some people suggest using another vacuum to try and remove this fine dust that builds up. The old Dyson could be completely broken down and toughly cleaned. I'm returning this thing and getting something besides a Dyson. For $650.00 I wouldn't expect something built so poorly, that requires another vacuum to clean it. I once loved Dyson, but no more. At least not until they redesign them.

mom of 3 kids and 7 animals
So i have 3 kids and 7 animals. The plus side of this vaccum is that it does the job and it does it well. I like the ball and the head fits under tight spaces. the suction is fantastic. I had the original dyson 7 years ago and this is a major step up from the original.
Of course what would a review be without a negative side lol. well the negatives are: (I am comparing this to the original dyson I had) The cord is shorter and the bin is smaller. Thank goodness I bought it at Bed Bath and Beyond because i had to exchange it for another one because it just quit working but my new one works even better. :)

Ooh, it's really light
Upgrading from the fantastic previous model, to the new design was worth it. It's more powerful and compact, however there are two quibbles I have. One is the ball design- it gets gross. People, if you are buying this because you've got furry dependents, you know what I mean. Of course the old version's wheels got gross, but they were small and didn't come into contact with anything else in the closet it is kept in. The ball just stares up at you, and while I clean it up, I can't stand the idea that a hem may touch it.
Secondly, while it was possible to wheel the old model around on it's back wheels, when you do that with this version, it just collapses back onto the carpet.
Really, these are tiny complaints- if you have a Dyson, you know this vacuum is the best for both pet hair and dirt. Upgrade, you'll be glad you did.

Dyson Rocks
I love this unit. I keep going back to Dyson. I started years ago with the original DC 07 and can't find anything that matches the pet hair extraction that Dyson provides. I have two long-haired cats, lots of cat hair to deal with, have been really disappointed with other brands. This model has a nice carry pack for accessories.
