So Easy to Make Jam
This is an excellent machine and so easy to use I am very pleased with it and recommend it highly.
My first venture was to make strawberry jam from the recipe in the accompanying booklet, Sweet and Simple. I made two batches one using the traditional recipe and the other using the reduced sugar recipe. Both tasted delicious my wife having a sweeter tooth preferred the traditional and I the reduced sugar. The following day, having strawberries left over, I made two further batches of reduced sugar jam with equal success.
The recipes in Sweet and Simple are somewhat limited and there is no recipe for one of my favorite breakfast spreads, marmalade so I adapted one. All the jam recipes in Sweet and Simple use either
2 2/3 or 3 ¼ cups of fruit for the traditional and reduced sugar recipes respectively so using the fruit ingredients for Easiest Ever Marmalade, a recipe in the Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving, and using the respective quantities of granulated sugar I made four batches of delicious marmalade. A batch making 4 half pint jars. Note the half tablespoon of butter is essential for all recipes made in the jam maker to avoid frothing over on your worktop.
The machine is so easy to use, you just sprinkle the pectin over the base of the pot making sure you have fitted the stirrer, spread the fruit over the pectin and start the machine. After 4 minutes the machine beeps to let you know it is time to add the sugar. After adding the sugar put the lid on the pot and wait until the next beep which tells you the jam is finished and time to put it into your hot sterile jars.
The pot and stirrer have a non-stick finish so when they and the lid have cooled it is easy to clean them in hot sudsy water. If you are making a second batch you have to wait ½ hour as the machine will not start but in my experience by the time you have bottled the jam and processed it in a hot water canner, washed the equipment and prepared the next batch of fruit the half hour has passed.
Having made your jam it is essential to follow the preserving instructions on page 18 of Sweet and Simple to ensure your product is safe.
So in summery, no standing and perspiring while stirring a hot pan of jam while trying to prevent it from sticking to the bottom and burning or boiling over. With the machine you have perfect jam in less than 30 minutes and it is fun to experiment with recipes. Buy and enjoy!
I should add that this is not the first item I have bought on line from BB & B and have found their delivery times and packaging to be first class.
