Best Ironing Board Cover, EVER!
I almost didn't buy this cover when I read the other reviews, but I loved the grid lines, so I figured instead of placing an online order, I'd go to my local BBB and sniff them out myself. :)
They smelled fine in the store, and the employees assured me if it smelled odd or had other problems mentioned in reviews, that I could return it for my $$$ back.
but it's been fantastic! I'm an etsy seller and sew for a living and I've completed dozens of orders on it already. The grid is fantastic, I've never smelled an odor, it hasn't scorched or anything - with hours of daily use.
Highly recommend it!

Not worth it.
I got this as a wedding gift. We had also registered for the Real Simple ironing board. Since this cover and the board were by the same people, you would think they would be made to fit each other, right? Nope! Even with the cover's draw string at its largest, I had to work really hard to stretch the cover over the ironing board, and the fabric that held the draw string ended up tearing. It seems to be a pretty cheap fabric. I haven't noticed a smell on mine like other reviewers have mentioned. I'm about to try using it for the first time, so we'll see if it ends up with scorch marks really quickly. So far, I'm really disappointed with this product. Tearing just while putting it a board that it should easily fit... not ok.

scorched!
I'm online now looking for a new cover because, like the other reviews, this cover scorched terribly, was hard on the iron, and did not last at all. I am an avid sewer and thought the grid lines would help with projects, but not worth the brown spots and damage to the fabrics.

smells horrible
I, too, purchased this cover for its appearance and for the thick padding; however, I never used it. It smells terrible. I suspect it's the fire retardant material that makes it smell like fish. I hoped it would dissipate, but it actually smelled up the entire bedroom where my ironing board is stored. I returned it the next day. The store clerk even remarked about the strong smell. Don't waste your money.
