Won't grind Starbucks - don't buy!!
I just got my grinder along with a dual boiler espresso machine. I plugged it in, put beans in the hopper, and couldn't get any espresso grind out. I talked to tech support twice, the first tech having me run the machine through various coarseness settings and it worked for a minute then clogged up. I called again, and the second tech told me the problem was that I was using Starbuck beans and they are somehow incompatible with the Smart Grinder. I asked how Starbucks managed to grind any doses in their stores and he fed me some line about how they don't have baristas at Starbucks... haha. They may have replaced them all with automatic machines, but there was a day when they pulled shots manually.
Has anyone else had this experience, or is my machine defective? I've had various machines and grinders over the years and I have run hundreds of pounds of Starbucks espresso thorough them without any hiccups. Now this thing balks out of the chute. I'm going to try to figure out if my machine is defective, or if it's that finicky. If you aren't willing to find "dry" beans, don't buy this machine.

Very nice grinder
Most noticeable is how quiet (but strong sounding) the Breville grinder is compared to other grinders I've had. It's also very easy to set the amount and grind for your particular need. I've used it primarily for a French Press, course grind and it's great. The grind is consistent and does not build up with a fine dust-like grind that gets thrown around making a mess. No static build up that I can see. Clean-up is very easy. One time in about 50 grinds it ran without grinding, even though there were plenty of beans in the hopper. A little shake resolved the issue, but concernes me a little. I thought I could smell the motor. Hasn't happened again. Maybe using the oily Starbucks French Roast exacerbates the problem. My old grinder did it a lot. All in all, so far so good.

So far, so good
Pros: Quiet, easy to clean, easy to adjust grind.
This is, of course, in comparison to other grinders.
Cons: Well, perhaps not a "con" but something you should note. The digtial read-out is really just an approximation. So much depends on the type of beans that you use. Also, I have noticed that
some people have complaints about not grinding coarse enough. It is possible to adust the grind by turning the knob beyond what the read-out shows.
There are several "clicks" possible beyond what
the graphic read-out shows. If you still cannot get a grind that is coarse enough there is something wrong with your machine.
All in all, very easy to use and maintain.

Possible Lemon
It is possible that I need to do an exchange. But, after looking at reviews on Amazon, people seem to have the same issue that I am. Anytime I set the grind in the "espresso" region I get "flour" type texture and the lowest grind is barely good enough for 'filter' machines. On the positive side, it does give a consistent grind regardless of the setting, it is not as loud as other products. It can grind auto or manual. I may change this review if the replacement one is better, if not, the shim "fix" that Breville did for this model was a failure.
