Before and After Thoughts: Save-the-Date & At-Home Cards

What?! You say, there are more things to mail out besides the wedding invitation and the thank you cards? Indeed there are. Here’s the rundown on two types of correspondence you might want to consider before and after the big day.
Save-the-Date Cards
Although wedding invitations are traditionally sent out eight weeks before the big day, save-the-date cards give out-of-town guests some extra time to make travel arrangements.
Timing. Save-the-date announcement cards are generally sent 4-6 months prior to the wedding date.
What to Include. A save-the-date announcement can be more elaborate, to include hotels in the area, transportation information, and any additional parties you might want guests to attend during the wedding weekend.
Destination Weddings. Save-the-date cards are essential if you’re having a destination wedding. To ensure flights and hotels can accommodate your guests, a lot of lead time will be necessary. Be sure to detail the dates of events, travel information, and your phone number if guests have any questions.
Format. Save-the-date announcements can run from formal to creative. Depending on the style of your wedding, you can send an engraved card that matches your invitation or do something offbeat, like a message tucked inside a fake coconut to announce the date of an island wedding.
At-Home Cards
It’s an old tradition that started around the era of the sock hop. At-home cards are simply cards that are sent to friends and family announcing your new address and your new names (if either one of you decided to make a name change).
Timing. Send an at-home card to your guests after your wedding.
What to Include. If one or both of you have changed your names, include your new name, your new address, and when you’ll be living there. If you’re hyphenating or combining your names, use your new name(s) on the card.
Printing. Ask your printer if they can include at-home cards as part of your stationery package. It might save you money if you order them with your wedding invitations.
Other Options. If you want to announce your new name and address without going to the extra expense of having at-home cards, use your new names at the top of your thank-you notes—and have your address printed on the back of the envelope.
These before and after correspondences will have you receiving more checked “will attend” boxes as well as help keep those who shared your special day in touch with you in the future.
