Dressing the Groom: Beyond the Tux

Everyone knows that weddings call for the groom to appear in his tip-top best. Although the basic tuxedo is a great option for some men, there are other ways to express your personal style. Depending on the type of wedding you're having, here are some ideas to getting a look you love.
Ultra-Formal Evening
Go for "white tie", which includes a black tailcoat, black trousers, white pique wing-collared shirt, black vest or cummerbund, and a white bow tie.
Ultra-Formal, Daytime
Think about wearing a cutaway coat, gray striped trousers, gray vest, ascot, and black shoes. If you'd like to dress to the nines, add a top hat, spats (a cloth or leather gaiter covering the shoe upper, and the ankle and fastening under the shoe with a strap), and gray gloves.
Formal, Evening
In addition to the basic black tux, try wearing a formal four-in-hand knotted tie instead of the traditional bow tie. For summer weddings, consider wearing a white dinner jacket with formal trousers.
Formal, Daytime
Options include the basic tux, tailcoats or a dapper gray stroller. These all work with a matching vest, a white spread-color shirt, an ascot or a four-in-hand, and a pocket square to set it all off.
Semiformal, Evening

Either don a dark tux or wear a dark suit in navy or charcoal with a white shirt.
In tropical climates, the groom and groomsmen can wear a lighter color suit in either light gray or khaki, or a tux with a white jacket.
Semiformal, Daytime

No tuxedo is necessary - wear a navy or gray suit. A white or ivory shirt works well with or without a tie.
Casual Daytime / Beach Wedding

Instead of a suit, consider wearing loose trousers and a long-sleeve guayabera, a popular Latin American-style shirt perfect for tropical climates.
Open or closed toe slides are also a great option for your feet.
Cultural Celebrations

African-American grooms may consider wearing a traditional African Kente cloth.
Grooms of a Scottish or Irish heritage might don a kilt. You can rent the whole Kilt–n-Kaboodle, which includes everything you’ll need to look your best.
Japanese grooms may choose to wear a beautiful black silk kimono along with a striped, pleated skirt called a hakata and a Japanese coat called a haori.
Just remember, before you buy or rent, check with your mate to make sure your outfit coordinates with hers. Not only do you want her to be happy, you want your pictures to reflect a fashion perspective.
