Something Old, Something New: What’s this all about?

People love the traditions associated with weddings. Something old reaffirms the bride’s link to her family and her "old" life. Something new represents fortune and success in her "new" life. Borrowed brings good luck, as tradition has it "borrowed" from a happy bride. Something blue traces back to biblical times and represents fidelity and purity.
Old, new and borrowed can be anything from the bride's jewelry to the bridal ensemble. Blue is most easily worked in with a garter, or nowadays blue nail polish on your toes.
Another interesting way to incorporate something old or borrowed is to find a tradition which reflects your religion or heritage. Have your first dance be the same as your parents. In certain countries the bride or groom wear or incorporate a special color into the ceremony, for example in Spain orange has great meaning. Or start your own family tradition, it will be new today and then someone else can borrow it and it will eventually be old.
