License to Marry. Where to go and what you need to know.
A marriage license is essentially a "permit" in which the state authorizes two people to be married. The requirements vary from state to state, but you must get the marriage license in the county where you are to be married, not where you currently reside. Unfortunately, you have to do this in person, as this is one area where mom cannot help you!

The location where you can obtain your marriage license varies by state: it may be your local city hall, the city or town clerk's office, or the marriage license bureau in the county where you plan to wed. And of course, you can search the internet for your state's marriage license requirements as many states have this information online. For example, if you are getting married in the state of New York, try typing in "New York Marriage License" in any search engine (such as lycos, askjeeves, dogpile, altavista, etc.). You may be pleasantly surprised how much information you can receive online

Once you have located the agency in your county that issues the marriage license, call and ask for all the specifics, including the timeline for the application process. Most states require both the bride and groom to be present (although there are a few exceptions). You will probably need:
Birth certificates - If you cannot locate your original birth certificate (after double-checking with Mom!), contact the county clerk where you were born.
Proof of citizenship and/or residence.
Photo identification.
Parental consent if underage.
Death certificate if widowed.
Divorce decree if divorced.
Blood test results (a few states still require this).

Be sure to ask how much the application fee is and more importantly, what types of payment are accepted. In some cases, marriage license offices only accept cash. The last thing you want is to have everything in order and get turned away due to lack of payment!

Once you apply, there may be a brief waiting period before the marriage ceremony can take place, and then there is also usually a time frame in which it is valid, varying from 30 to 60 days. Make sure you look at your wedding date and plan accordingly.
