- Wedding Ideas & Advice for the Couple, Wedding Party and Guests

A Day to Call Your Own: Secrets to Unique Weddings

Are you dreaming about a creative wedding celebration that none of your guests will ever forget? Many of today’s couples are opting for weddings that break out of the usual place of worship-and-a-catering hall combination. Walk down the aisle of creative bliss with these unique ideas.
Unusual Venues
One way to go is to host your reception (and perhaps your ceremony) at an unexpected location. Some locations will include an in-house caterer; others may not, which will require you to bring in a catering staff and a party rental service.
Botanical Garden. Say “I do” amongst blooming flowers, rock gardens, and grassy knolls. Your wedding celebration is sure to look and smell gorgeous.
Historic House or Museum. Art and history lovers will love to be married surrounded by paintings and inspiring architecture. Little decoration is needed when you have soaring arches and oil paintings as your backdrop.
Loft Space. Folks with contemporary tastes and a love for city life will love the light and clean lines of a loft. Many lofts have great views as well.
Tent. Does someone in your family have a big backyard? An outdoor wedding is especially cozy and intimate when huddled under a big white tent.
Cliffside Wedding. Ceremonies are especially romantic and dramatic when held on a breezy bluff. It’s the ultimate “take a leap into life” metaphor.
Rent a House. Consider renting a ski or beach house for a small, intimate wedding reception. You can have the ceremony on the property or in a nearby place of worship.
Winery. Many wineries have wonderful spaces for parties. The scenery is expansive and calming - and you know there will be a variety of wines to taste.
Cruise Boat. Hit the high seas on a yacht. Just make sure that you or your mate aren’t prone to seasickness.
Beach. Beach. Always popular, a beach wedding is ideal for couples who love walking barefoot and feeling at one with the sun, sea and sand.
Castle. Castle weddings are dramatic and can transform any couple’s fairytale dream into a reality.
Themed Weddings
If you and your honey are the type of people who love to dress up for theme parties, you just might be the candidate for a theme wedding.
Country BBQ. For a down home good time, get married on a farm. Think barbeque, square dancing, and hayrides. Wildflowers can adorn the tables and guests can sit on bales of hay. Let the kids and dogs run wild during the reception!
Holiday Wedding. If Christmastime is your favorite time of year, take advantage of the season by throwing a party at a snowy lodge. Use colors like red and green (or white and silver) in your decorating motif, incorporate lots of candles, and position Christmas trees in the corners of the rooms.
Swing Wedding. If doing the Lindy is your thing, throw a wedding at a retro style dance hall or restaurant. Book a band that can play “swing” favorites, buy a 40s-style gown, and have the groom wear a zoot suit.
Halloween Wedding. Throw the ultimate costume party. Indicate on your invitation that all guests should dress in costume. Get married in a Gothic church, dress tables with pumpkins and candles, and give out loot bags at the end of the night.
Valentine’s Day. Celebrate Cupid’s power by hosting a party at a Victorian estate and decorating tables with red roses and ribbons. Serve tons of chocolate and have the band play as many love tunes as possible!
Heritage Celebrations
Stay true to your roots by incorporating ethnic elements into your celebration. Here are a few popular ideas.
Latin American Weddings. A special fiesta should include a variety of tapas, flan, and sangria. Hire a band that can play the mambo, merengue, and lots of salsa music.
Irish Customs. Get the groom into a kilt, hire a bagpipe player, and serve a traditional Irish menu of corned beef, cabbage, soda bread - and beer!
Jewish Weddings. Hire a band that plays Klezmer, a celebratory, old-world style of music which began in the days of Yiddish-speaking Eastern Europe.
Afro-centric Ideas. Get dressed up in African-accented clothes, hire African drummers to play during the reception, or “jump the broom”.
Most importantly it’s your day to celebrate in your way. There doesn’t have to be anything cookie cutter about it. Get inventive and put yourself in your guests’ chairs. Whatever you think would be fun, they’re sure to follow suit. It’s your party; make the most out of it.
