Band vs. DJ? Tune in to These Tips.

One of the most important decisions you will make regarding your wedding will be choosing music. Take the time to hire musicians and/or a DJ who will be responsive to your wishes and help create a perfect day.
Hiring a Band:
If you choose to hire a band, try to see a live performance or at least watch an audition tape. Then a contract should be written which includes but is not limited to the following details:
who is providing equipment & transportation
rental fees
a backup plan should any band members become ill
the hours they will play and the specific parts of the wedding during which they will play
all fees and overtime rates
late-arrival penalties
number and length of breaks
whether or not music will be continuous (ask for taped music or a soloist during breaks)
musicians’ attire
Expect to pay a 50% deposit up front, with the balance due on your wedding day. If the vocalist or "star" of the orchestra whom you thought you booked does not show up, or the group deviates in any way from the service promised in the contract, decrease the balance due accordingly.
Members of the bands do not expect tips or full meals, but since the average reception is four hours, you should offer them snacks or sandwiches.
The DJ Alternative:
Unless your wedding is extremely formal, hiring a DJ in place of a band is perfectly appropriate. The benefits of hiring a DJ include:
being able to choose from an extremely wide variety of music
original songs played as guests remember them
minimal space needed for equipment
continuous music
a skilled announcer
If you decide to hire a DJ for all or part of your wedding, you will want to have a detail contract written up as well. Don’t forget to specify attire, and make sure the person you saw and spoke with is the person who will actually be the DJ at your wedding.
In most cases, hiring a DJ will be less expensive than hiring live musicians. Most charge a set fee for a party. Specify this amount, as well as overtime rates in your contract. Also allow for a 10 - 15% tip at the end of the evening.
