Wedding Weekend Getaways: Making the Best of a Weekend Wedding

If you’ve been invited to an out-of-town wedding, you’ll want to make the most of your experience. After all, attending a wedding in a distant city costs time and money - so take advantage of the experience and follow these tips for making your getaway stress-free and fabulous.
Plan Ahead

Get with the Program. Find out about the scheduled events you are invited to attend and adjust your flights and vacation time accordingly. Get an itinerary for the weekend. If you do not have one, create one for yourself so that you have a good understanding of what your weekend will entail.
Packing. Make sure to carry-on any essentials that can’t easily be replaced.
Gift of Giving. Nothing will be better than not having to lug a gift on a plane. Find out where the engaged couple is registered and send a gift before hand. It’ll save both you and the couple lots of stress.
Getting Around. If you intend on traveling on your own, you might want to consider renting a car. Having a car will help getting around from location to location above and beyond the actual wedding events.
Map Quest. Be prepared by getting directions to the hotel, ceremony and reception sites.
Ways to Save

Hotel Rooms. Many hosts often reserve a block of rooms at discounted rates for out-of-town guests. Definitely take advantage of this cost-saving option.
Share Expenses. Coordinate with friends to find out if you can share cabs, rental cars, or even a hotel room.
Maximize Your Time

Get-together. Out-of-town weddings present a wonderful opportunity to catch up with people you don’t see often. Contact friends and make plans to get together for lunch or coffee, so you can get some quality one on one time.
Sightsee. If you’re visiting an interesting city, go online and find out about local attractions like museum exhibits, great restaurants, or local hiking trails or parks. Also try picking up a copy of the local paper which usually contains a calendar of events.
Relaxing Ideas

Spa. If chilling out is your M.O., find out if the hotel you’re staying at has a spa. Reserve massage or manicure and pedicure appointments at least a week or two before you arrive.
Catch up on Sleep. Put the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the doorknob, close the blinds, and get some much-needed rest.
Room Service. Order tea, fruit salad and other healthy options to treat yourself like royalty during your stay.
The most important thing to remember during your stay is to give yourself ample time to get ready for the ceremony, reception and any other special events you’re required to attend - after all, you’ve come to the wedding to celebrate the union of this special couple.
