shop for baby gliders product guide

There are two types of gliders - wood and upholstered.

Wood Gliders - come in 6 styles: two post, bow, sleigh, transitional, curved and grand (which is available in sleigh or two post style). In general wood gliders take up less room than an upholstered chair and have removable cushions. Cushions come in lots of fabric and pattern choices letting you change themes as your child get older. Some wood gliders have padded armrests with pockets. The cushions are removable for replacement, but are not machine washable. Lumbar support is available on some models for additional comfort and support while feeding and rocking your baby.

Upholstered Gliders - Have a larger more plush seating area and many models will have a built-in foot rest that extends out when the chair is reclined eliminating the need for an ottoman. This provides added comfort without the additional cost of an ottoman, and folds into the chair when not in use, giving you valuable space in the nursery. These gliders come in a wide variety of styles as do the fabric and pattern selections.

Other features to look for include:

A locking mechanism will stabilize the glider in the desired position. It steadies the glider, making it easier to stand while holding your sleeping baby. Locking the glider will make it safer for toddlers to climb in when the parent is not around. Some models have the ability to lock in a variety of positions. Locking the glider adds flexibility in placing the glider closer to the wall if necessary.

A reclining glider can range from multiple positions to none at all, depending on the model. An adjustable backrest helps find the most comfortable position to feed or rock your baby.

A glider that swivels makes it easier to sit in or step out of the chair when using an ottoman by avoiding the need to squeeze between the chair and ottoman. Most have a 360 degree swivel capability which lets you turn to keep an eye on other children in the room.

A matching ottoman is a must have with a wood glider. The ottoman is designed with the same gliding motion to provide a quiet flow of movement with the glider. There are two types of ottomans.
  • Gliding Ottoman - generally sold separately from the glider, it relieves knee pressure and offers a complete feeling of relaxation. Please note gliding ottomans do not have a locking mechanism.
  • Nursing Ottoman - has the same benefits of a gliding ottoman, plus a pull out nursing stool. The stool is available in two styles - flat or ergonomic. You pull out the stool to give yourself the most comfortable and supportive position for nursing. It is also useful for a comfortable reading position.
