STAINLESS STEEL
Most flatware is made of the very durable material stainless steel, and is available in 3 selections: 18/10, 18/8, and 18/0. 18/10 stainless is the ratio of chromium to nickel content (18% chromium/10% nickel). The chromium provides rust resistance and the nickel content ranges from 10% at its highest to 8% or 0%. Nickel is what accounts for the luster of the finish.

SILVERPLATE
Flatware which is silverplated has a coating of silver over a base of metal alloy. Nickel, Copper and Zinc are the metals most commonly used in the alloy. Keep in mind that silverplate flatware will provide the look of silver, though, over time, the plating may wear off.

STERLING SILVER
Flatware that is made of Sterling silver is heavy and extremely durable. You may notice that Sterling silver is often made with the most intricate designs; a common feature that only adds to the brilliance and elegance of these flatware sets.

When choosing your flatware style, keep in mind the dinnerware that you've already chosen. Try to find something that will complement your plates, not overwhelm them. You should also purchase enough flatware to accompany your dinnerware place settings. The most durable flatware will be heavier, thicker in gauge and less likely to bend. Better quality flatware will be well-balanced for comfort and durability. When purchasing flatware be sure to hold different flatware patterns to determine which feels comfortable and most balanced.
