I have been told walkers are not safe.
When used properly, they are safe. New walkers have improved safety standards to protect against stairway falls. According to this standard, walkers must have bottom friction strips made of rubberized material to stop the walker if the wheels drop away at the edge of a step. You should only use them under close adult supervision and away from steps. If parents are borrowing a walker they should be cautious to ensure it meets this safety standard.
Are activity centers safe for my child's hip or back?
Generally, doctors think activity centers are just fine for babies, but there are exceptions. They hold a child's hip extended, just as walkers do, which is not good if a baby spends a lot of time in them. Simply limit the time your baby spends in the entertainer, it should be no more than 30 minutes at a time. As always you can consult with your pediatrician.
