Diaper Pails
diaper pails
how to choose
shop for diaper pails product guide

The good news is there are many styles to choose from, each with their own unique method of preventing odors and germs. When selecting a diaper pail, look for these four main features:

1. Odor Prevention - Since each pail design is unique, each has a different method of preventing odors. Some use more than one type of odor prevention.
  • Carbon filters (e.g. Graco, 1st Years)
    • Absorbs odors
    • Needs to be changed every 30 days

  • Fan system (e.g. Graco, 1st Years)
    • Circulates the air reducing odors
    • Requires batteries

  • Trap door (e.g. Diaper Champ, Graco, 1st years, Diaper Dekor)
    • Seals odors inside the pail

  • Odor-resistant scented plastic liner bags (e.g. Diaper Genie)
    • Scented liners help mask odors

2. Capacity - The capacity differs by model, and is typically based on newborn size diapers.
  • Large capacity
    • Absorbs odors
    • Needs to be emptied less frequently

  • Smaller capacity
    • Needs to be emptied more frequently
    • Emptying it more often helps reduce odors

3. Liners/Bags - Some models use regular garbage bags while others use plastic liners specifically made for a certain model.
  • Liners
    • Some liners are biodegradable
    • Some liners are scented to mask odor or are odor-resistant

  • Garbage bags
    • Cost efficient
    • Will not mask odors as well as liners

4 - Hands-Free Operation - Let's parent dispose of diapers while safely keeping a hand on baby. Hands-free is typically available in two styles.
  • Foot pedal operation
    • Parents use their foot to open the lid
    • Also prevents small children from opening because they do not have the strength or coordination required

  • Motion activated lid
    • Lid opens when diaper/hand is waved in front of it
    • Batteries are required for these styles
