What is the difference between precious and semi-precious stones?

Precious stones typically refer to Ruby, Emerald, and Sapphires, while semi-precious typically refers to other colored gemstones such as Amethyst, Topaz, or Citrine. The word semi-precious can be somewhat misleading as it suggests an inferior value associated with this stone category, which is not necessarily the case. All natural colored stones are rare, precious, and valuable. Prices are determined by the availability, quality, and size of the stone.

What are the birthstones for each month?

  • January – Garnet
  • February – Amethyst
  • March – Aquamarine
  • April – Diamond
  • May – Emerald
  • June – Pearl
  • July – Ruby
  • August – Peridot
  • September – Sapphire
  • October - Opal
  • November – Citrine
  • December – Topaz

Why do I only see a millimeter (mm) size on gemstones and not an exact carat weight?

Colored stone cutting is not an exact science. When listing a piece of colored stone jewelry we guarantee a minimum millimeter size. Most colored stones are bought and sold according to a calibrated millimeter size because carat weights can vary widely.
