Is there a standard size window?

There really is no "standard" size window. How wide you would like your window to look is left up to your discretion. Since most hardware can be mounted on the outside of the frame, the width of the window can seem as wide as you deem fit. Give the illusion of a larger, wider window by positioning your decorative curtain rod above the frame and mount the hardware a few inches wider than the width of the window frame.

What do I need to cover my windows?

Use two to four times the width of your window when calculating the amount of fabric needed.

Valances: If you have a 40" wide window and the valance is 72" wide, you should hang two valances for a total of 144" of fabric. One would not be enough; therefore hanging two valances will give a full look to the treatment.

Panels: When selecting drapery panels you want the window to look balanced. Plan on two to four panels for each window. For example, if you have selected a lighter weight, flowing material for your panels, using two panels may cause the window treatment to look incomplete. In this scenario use four panels to ensure the window treatment looks full and enough coverage is provided.

Sheers: Filling the center of the treatment with sheers will help to fill out the treatment without blocking light. Look for sheers that coordinate (in color and style) with the panels you have selected.
