Will one vacuum fit all my needs in a large home?
For maintenance of your home, it is most efficient to purchase more than one style of vacuum. The upright or canister model will be used in your larger main rooms, and keep a sweeper or stick- broom easily accessible for quick clean-ups in the kitchen and bathrooms. A hand vac might be preferable, though, if you find yourself wanting to quickly clean small areas of debris off of carpets and hard floors alike.
If we suffer from allergies, can certain vacuums help?
Yes. Look for models with a HEPA filtration system, which removes the highest percentage of dust mites and pollen from the carpet. These filters will trap the allergens so that they are not dispersed back into the air.
Should I buy an upright or a canister vacuum?
Upright vacuums will always be better for large and wall-to-wall carpeted areas. Most vacuums today offer a feature that adjusts to the surface that you are cleaning, from hardwood to deep pile carpets. The best models will come with attachments and an extra long hose to accommodate all your vacuuming needs. A canister vacuum may be easier to maneuver when cleaning stairs or moving between your upstairs and downstairs rooms.
