A good quality down comforter will provide lightweight warmth, serve as a natural insulator keeping in your body heat, be allergy free, and last but not least, make for a cozy, inviting bed. Price point is determined by the quality of the down, not by its weight. To ensure a longer life, a down comforter should be used with a duvet cover. Not only will this protect the down from dirt and impurities, it will allow you to introduce change, color and style into your bedroom.

There are three key elements to look for when choosing a down comforter. They are FILL POWER, THREAD COUNT and BAFFLE BOX CONSTRUCTION.

FILL POWER: On highest quality down comforters, you will typically see fill power listed. It is the measure for the amount of space one ounce of down takes up. The higher the fill power, the better the insulating ability and loft a down comforter will have. Fill power provides a good measure of warmth and quality.

THREAD COUNT: Thread count represents the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Select down comforters will have a quality fabric with a high thread count. The higher thread count provides softness, durability and will keep the fill from getting out and impurities from getting in.

BAFFLE BOX CONSTRUCTION: Baffling is simply a type of construction, specifically vertically sewn in cloth walls to keep the down from shifting and clumping. Without baffling you'll have cold spots where there is stitching and no down present. Keep in mind that not all down comforters are constructed with baffling, so look for this feature.

When choosing your down comforter look closely at the warranty. More so than usual, this speaks volumes about the product's quality. Warranties range from a year to a lifetime, so what may seem like a great deal won't be if you end up with a flat, clumpy comforter that won't insulate.

Duvet covers can be used to cover any blanket or comforter, but they are essential to a down comforter. It's like a big pillowcase to protect and decorate your comforter. Click to our duvet product guide for more information.
