How do I know what size tablecloth I will need?

A tablecloth should have a 6" - 10" drop. To select the right cloth, add approximately 12 to 20 inches to the actual length and width of your table. Banquet-sized tables, which are extra-wide, will use an oversized cloth that is 70" in width. Still, the drop length is somewhat of a personal preference, so add inches for a drop that will suit your needs and style. When in doubt, err on the larger size; it is better that your tablecloth is too long than too short.

How do I choose my table accessories?

First gather your options and choose only those table materials that you want to reflect your personal taste. Remember your dinnerware pattern and choose accessories that won't clash. There are a variety of options to choose from and the possibilities are endless. For instance, you may want to use placemats and napkins without a tablecloth to reflect the natural beauty of your detailed table. You might, on the other hand, want a tablecloth that is simple enough to transform from casual to formal by adding detailed napkins and a runner. The thing to remember when choosing your accessories is this: keep it simple. You want a clean palette that you can add dinnerware, flatware and, of course food to without uncomfortable clutter.

What colors are appropriate?

Yes, colors and designs are all a matter of personal preference; however certain colors can benefit your occasion. Rich chocolates, reds and yellow tones are said to increase appetite, which is why these colors tend to look stunning beneath food. A good shade of green can sometimes make for an appropriate color as well. Stay away from elaborate designs and color combinations that take awhile to get used to. Also consider the value of simplicity; you may want to re-think the modern wild colors that you love this season and trade them in for a crisp off-white that will last for years.

I want a cotton tablecloth, but I don't want to worry about stains. Are there alternatives?

Clear tablecloth protectors work to prevent stains, while letting you simply wipe-clean after meals. These protectors tend to feel soft and allow the natural beauty of your tablecloth to come through.
