WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO STORE BREAST MILK?
According to Consumer Reports, freshly expressed breast milk can be safely stored in the refrigerator for 24 hours. It can also be placed in the freezer for 3-4 months. Use the storage containers that came with your pump, or you can also find breast milk freezer storage bags. Remember to date all stored milk and use the oldest first. Be sure to place it in the back of the freezer to avoid thawing when the freezer door is opened and closed. Thawed milk can be stored in the refrigerator for 24 hours and should never be refrozen. To thaw frozen milk just run it under warm water. Never microwave breast milk. Hot spots can occur which can burn baby, and the microwave will change the nutritional composition of the breast milk. As always, consult with your pediatrician for more details on proper storage of breast milk.
WHY ARE SOME BREAST PUMPS SO MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OTHERS?
The more expensive breast pumps will be motorized and function more like those models found in hospitals. They will pump faster; closely mimic how a baby naturally suckles and may offer additional conveniences (which may be sold separately) such as AC power and car lighter adapters, double pumping and of course a stylish bag to carry it in. You will immediately appreciate the ease of using a quality breast pump.
WHICH BOTTLE WILL BE BEST TO TRANSITION MY BABY FROM BREAST FEEDING TO BOTTLE FEEDING?
Natural Feeding Bottle Systems will help baby transition from breast to bottle as well as alternate more easily between the two. These natural shaped nipples will feel more like your natural breast, helping baby to transition to bottle feeding more easily. As always, remember that it may take more than one try to find a bottle and nipple combination that baby is comfortable with. There's lots to choose from, so don't worry if your first selection doesn't work.
I WILL BE GOING BACK TO WORK AND WANT TO PUMP AT MY OFFICE. WHICH BREAST PUMP WOULD YOU RECOMMEND?
You should definitely make the investment in a quality motorized pump. They will pump faster, offer convenient storage solutions for pumped milk and be easy to carry back and forth from the office. Motorized models that pump both breasts at the same time will be fastest. Some of the better pumps will come in a simple storage bag that won't scream BREAST PUMP as you walk into the office too.
