WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LATEX AND SILICONE NIPPLES?
The easiest way to distinguish Latex nipples is their golden, brownish color. Silicone nipples will be clear, as well as odorless, heat resistant and much less porous than Latex. The porous nature of Latex may allow for the build-up of bacteria in the nipple and make it more susceptible to cracking. Overall, Silicone nipples are more durable and will hold their shape well.
DO I NEED A BOTTLE STERILIZER? CAN'T I JUST PUT THE BOTTLES IN THE DISHWASHER?
Although most bottles and accessories are dishwasher safe, you will certainly enjoy the added convenience of a Bottle Sterilizer. Since you can even throw in pacifiers and parts to your breast pump, a Bottle Sterilizer may become one of your homes most popular kitchen appliances. No room on the counter? You will also find quick steam bags, which remove 99.9% of household bacteria and are even reusable. Of course, you should check with the manufacturer's instructions on all items to ensure you follow the recommended steps to sterilize all your baby stuff safely. You should also discuss bottle safety with your Pediatrician.
HOW CAN I MINIMIZE MY BABY GETTING GAS AFTER FEEDINGS?
Unlike Reusable bottles, Disposable bottles use pre-sterilized liners which are inserted into the bottle and secured by screwing on the top. They reduce the mess and clean-up time, as when baby's done, the liner is removed and tossed away. Reusable bottles must be properly cleaned after each feeding. Disposable style bottles are available from most bottle system brands. So if you've found a nipple style that's working well, there should be a disposable bottle to match.
HOW CAN I MINIMIZE MY BABY GETTING GAS AFTER FEEDINGS?
Be sure to start with your Pediatrician, for guidance on gas and fussiness. Using a nipple that reduces the flow of air to baby's tummy is a great help too. Look for bottle systems that offer designs specifically made to "reduce colic and gas." It is the nipple design that has the greatest impact, not the bottle. Since there are multiple style bottle systems that profess to reduce fussiness, you may need to try more than one to determine which works best for your baby. Be patient, ultimately you will find one that works well.
WHY WOULD I NEED A BOTTLE WARMER?
Since sleep deprived will soon become one of your character traits, we recommend looking for things that will make your life a little easier. A Bottle Warmer is one of those things. It will warm bottles safely in minutes, without boiling, and without the worry of hot spots which can occur in the microwave. Some styles even include a chamber to keep bottles chilled until they're needed (keep the Bottle Warmer in the nursery with a bottle waiting in the cool chamber for those late night feedings). Most bottle warmers are fairly universal and will hold all style bottles, including wide mouthed, disposables and even angled. They will also accept baby food jars.
