CARES Child Aviation Safety Restraint
Thank you for purchasing an AmSafe Child Aviation Restraint, also known as CARES. You've made a wise and caring investment for your child's safety while traveling on airplanes. They're simple to use, and designed with your child's safety in mind. The CARES restraint is designed to secure children between the ages of two and four years old, who weigh between 22 and 44 pounds, and are less than 40 inches tall.
CARES restraints are lightweight and compact, easy to install and fit in a small carrying pouch or sac. Best of all, only one person is needed to install it. And unlike car seats approved for air travel, the CARES restraint is a small, compact safety device that does not hinder or impeded the movement of other passengers on board.
Before using this product, please note these very important safety guidelines. CARES should be installed in forward facing aircraft seats only. No side facing seats. CARES is designed for use only during air travel, and should not, under any circumstance, be used in an automobile. CARES should not be installed on seats located in exit or emergency rows. Individual air carriers may have other installation restrictions. Check with your airline for guidance.
Installing CARES. With just a few minutes of practice, you'll easily be able to install the CARES restraint. First, seat your child in the airplane seat he or she will occupy. Next, lower the tray table behind your child's seat. Slide the red loop over the seat back. Adjust the height to be at or above the child's shoulders. Tighten the strap by pulling on the loose strap through the metal adjuster. Return the tray table to its closed position, covering the red loop. Place the shoulder straps over your child's shoulders.
Then, slide the seat belt connector and buckle through small loops on the end of each vertical strap. Buckle the seat belt, and tighten it snugly across your child's lap. Then, connect the chest clip. Finally, adjust the shoulder straps, so your child is firmly, but comfortably, secured.
Your child is now safely buckled in for take-off, landing, and whenever the captain has illuminated the fasten seat belt sign. AmSafe also recommends that you keep your seat belt and your child's CARES fastened at all times when in flight.
Do not remove CARES until the seat belt sign is turned off, and the aircraft is parked at the arrival gate. To remove your child from CARES, simply unbuckle the aircraft seat belt, and unfasten the chest clip. To remove CARES from the aircraft seat, lower the tray table behind your child's seat partway. Pull on the black pull tab attached to the metal adjuster to loosen it. Lift the red loop off the seat back, and return the tray table to its closed position. Place the CARES restraint in its convenient carrying pouch.
In an emergency, the lap seat belt can be unbuckled, and the CARES straps and chest clip can be pulled up and over the child's head.
