It is a great pleasure to be part of the worldwide NOVICA, that put their interest afar to Chiang Mai Thailand, especially to our product "Siam Celadon". I, Penpan Wangviwat the owner of Siam Celadon Pottery Co., Ltd. which founded in 1976, a part of other family businesses. My passion in nature and traditional lifestyle that surrounded me has helped me to discover the art of pottery with the charming of ancient ceramics, the unearthed Celadon wares in Sukothai period as well as in Sankamphaeng kiln. Celadon is a name for pottery glazing, an ancient Chinese innovation discovered over than 2000 years ago. I've always been fascinated by the beauty of Celadon since I was a student. At that time I've seen many famous traditional handicrafts such as Thai silk, cotton, pottery and wood sculpture. In 1976 me and my friend started a small ceramic factory for produced the celadon products, we didn't have much know-how of the processing but learning from some old generation craftsman and try to studied and improved more from many sourcing. We started from only 1 ceramic kiln and 10 staffs, the first products line such as a plate, bowl, mug, vase or a small decorative sold to a Thai and foreign tourist. We chose the location for our factory in Sankamphaeng district, Chiang Mai because this area has been known for traditional Thai items for tourist until now. Our strength is we have always been try to keep the real celadon glazing mixture formula, must come from two kinds of wood ash mixed with the topsoil after harvesting from the rice field. It's greenish color glazing gives the glossy surface of the pottery products to be as beautiful as jade and no chemical color in every process. Celadon is a reaction of the natural organic substances blended within the atmosphere of the high fire temperature kiln, the position where the products are in the kiln also a major part to the running of the natural glazing mixture. The age of the two kind of woods to turn them to ash are to be selected, as they are influence the color shading. Each part influences others and turned to be a characteristic of the standard green Celadon. Charming of its glossy but uneven color form the running glazing over the under surface crackling is unique and recognized as each piece will not be identical to others of the same item. Due to the country's deforestation has made the two kind of woods are rare as well as the firing control technique has become too complicated in the competitiveness trade situation. So we use waste wood like an expired Longan wood and others, we have to adjust the mixture formula and improve our design in the same time to suites people lifestyle. The factory is my family's business and I have my daughter as an successor, I help in general operation, marketing and the factory standard. We have several departments such as soil, glazing, molding, designing etc. each department have a supervisor. Teamwork is the most important for handicraft business and need delicately from every single step.
