We Asked Our Customers: What’s the Best Grilling Advice You Ever Got from Dad?

We wanted to hear Dad’s best grilling advice–and you delivered.

It’s grilling season, the best season of them all. And it’s also almost Father’s Day. So in our latest Facebook question for our customers, we decided to combine one of the great things about dads (good advice) with one of the great things about grilling season (grilling, duh).

As always, you guys delivered! Here’s what you (or rather, your dads) had to say.

Don’t Burn Yourself

“The best grilling advice I ever received from my dad was to stand back, if I valued my eyebrows.” —Kim Martin

Can’t argue with that. Safety first, always.

Don’t Burn Your Food (or Your House Down) Either

“Never leave your grill while grilling until you're done.” —Veronica Ryan

“Never walk away from the grill!” —Wesley Hewitt

“Always watch your heat and enjoy your cooking.” —Bob Larabie

This one combines safety with some solid cooking advice. Even if you’re just running inside for a minute, don’t leave the grill on without someone watching it. You could burn your food, or worse, your grill could start a fire. Watch your heat and your food at all times.

“Low and slow” —Patti Vallett

“Grill steaks on low heat and take your time.” —Lisa Wills-Hayes

Grilling isn’t always the fastest way to cook your food, but it is incredibly tasty. A charcoal grill may take a few hours to finish cooking your ribs, but we promise, it’s worth it.

How to Get the Best Flavor

“My older brother was my father figure and the one who taught me how to cook with a charcoal grill. The best advice he gave me was "Buy a chimney starter." I did, and it has been a great investment. No more lighter fluid aftertaste! Years later, he asked me to teach him how to cook ribs on the grill.” —Lynn Hollis

And just like that, the student becomes the master! We love chimney starters because you don’t have to use newspapers or lighter fluid, eliminating any odors and unwanted flavors that go along with them.

On the Importance of Beer

“Use beer.” —Kimberly Daroya

“Add beer.” —Michele Regan

You’re going to want to have beer when you grill, and we’re not just talking about cracking open a cold one while you cook. Ever have beer can chicken? If not, you’re missing out. Beer also works for brining and marinating other meats and veggies.

Presented without Comment

“Never grill naked.” —Juanita Reed Lincoln

When All Else Fails...

“Order takeout.” —Julie Ann

This one made us laugh, but we have to admit that sometimes that just may be the best advice. Because in the end it’s not about the food, it’s about time spent together. And sharing a meal is a great way to get that QT in, no matter how it gets to your table.

Happy Father’s Day!
