How to Choose a Rug

Spring means cleaning, organizing, fresh design ideas, and maybe even a new (or vintage) rug or two. Because navigating the world of rugs and floor coverings can be overwhelming, we turned to Jillian, our rug expert, to guide us through the process. Here’s her advice for how to <a href="https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/guide/buying-guide-rugs/pubbbg510018">pick the perfect rug</a>.

How should a rug influence your design decisions?

“If you’re starting from scratch, I recommend choosing a rug that speaks to you and building the rest of your furniture and decor around it.”

Size does matter

“When it comes to rugs, in my opinion, bigger is always better. A rug that covers most of the room makes any space feel larger.”

Are certain spaces better suited to certain types of rugs?

“<a href="https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/s/sheepskin-rugs/1-24?ta=typeahead&view=GRID">In short, soft rugs</a> are perfect for bedrooms. Easy-care <a href="https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/category/home-decor/rugs-door-mats/outdoor-rugs/12192/">indoor/outdoor rugs</a> work well on patios and decks or in playrooms. For under your kitchen or dining room table, try a <a href="https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/s/jute-rugs?ta=typeahead">jute rug</a>; for hallways stick to runners. And for the living room? Choose a low-pile, <a href="https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/category/home-decor/rugs-door-mats/area-rugs/12193/">synthetic area rug</a>.”

To layer or not to layer?

“Layering rugs doesn’t have to feel intimidating. And you don’t need to be an interior designer to do it successfully. Here are five great tips on how and when to layer rugs in your home—beautifully.”

	<li>If you want your space to have some color but don’t want to go too crazy, layer a busier pattern or bolder color rug on top of something neutral.</li>
	<li>“Layer a sheepskin over a simple rug in a bedroom to add softness to the space,” says Jillian. Sheepskin rugs tend to be expensive, but even a small one makes the room feel cozier.</li>
	<li>For multipurpose rooms, Jillian says, “Use a smaller rug, such as cowhide or kilim, to define a seating area over carpeting or a larger area rug. “If your living room also functions as a dining room or office (or all three), you can mark a separate space with a rug.</li>
	<li>Babies are soft and cuddly, and their rooms should be the same way. “In a nursery, layer a small soft shag or fur-like rug over carpeting,” says Jillian.</li>
	<li>For long, narrow spaces (think entryways and hallways), it can be really beautiful to layer several rugs together,” suggests Jillian. “Vintage runners are really hot right now and hold up in high-traffic areas like hallways and even kitchens.</li>

How often should you deep clean your rugs beyond regular vacuuming, and what’s the best way to do it?

“Properly caring for your rug helps extend its lifespan. But how you care for it depends on the fibers. Other factors include how much wear and tear the rug experiences and whether you have pets or small children at home. That said, vacuum high-traffic areas once or twice a week.

Clean up spills by blotting the area as soon as possible. (Use a spot cleaner designed for your particular rug’s fibers.) Dry clean expensive rugs every 6 to 12 months to keep them looking fresh, and rotate rugs at least once a year to prevent uneven wear.

If possible, keep rugs made of natural fibers out of direct sunlight to prevent them from fading. Finally, rugs woven from absorbent fibers should be used in non-humid spaces only.”
