Step Away from the Hammer

If you want to turn bland cinder block into a concrete expression of your identity, you&rsquo;ll need a way to hang stuff without damaging the walls. Your solution: 3M Command&trade; products. Instructions

	<li>Measure the wall space you want to fill and mark the area with painter&rsquo;s tape.</li>
	<li>Use tape to section off an area on the floor that&rsquo;s the same as the wall measurements.</li>
	<li>Lay all of your pieces out on the floor within the taped area.</li>
	<li>Spread paper on the floor, trace your pieces onto it, and cut out the shapes.</li>
	<li>Put down the largest cutout first and build the rest around that.</li>
	<li>Leave 1 &frac12; to 3 inches between each item.</li>
	<li>Place the paper cutouts on the floor in the way you&rsquo;d like to see them on your wall.</li>
	<li>Try different arrangements until you&rsquo;re happy with the look.</li>
	<li>Once you&rsquo;ve locked down a pattern, take a picture and use it as a guide.</li>
	<li>Tape the paper cutouts to your wall.</li>
	<li>Remove the paper as you hang each piece.</li>
</ol>

Voila! Stand back and admire your new gallery wall.

Make Space for Storage Pieces

No coat closet? No problem. A hall tree with shelving and hooks is a great way to add storage space. Use the hooks to hang outerwear for the current season, as well as any hats. Put baskets on the shelves to hold smaller accessories.

But did you know that more than 85 percent of flowering plants require pollinating insects to stay healthy and reproduce? Reconsider Your Lawn

Don&rsquo;t get me wrong, I love to luxuriate on a velvety green lawn. But there&rsquo;s a price to pay for all that uniform verdant lushness. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, U.S. lawns require nearly 3 trillion gallons of water a year, 200 million gallons of gas (for all that mowing), and 70 million pounds of pesticides. And unfortunately, manicured lawns provide virtually no habitat for pollinators and other animals and plants that make up a healthy, diverse ecosystem.

What are the alternatives?

Let your grass grow tall and flower. Check your local regulations before going wild, as some towns have rules about keeping lawns tidy.

Sprinkle seeds for low-growing flowering plants into your existing lawn in early spring. Dutch white clover and creeping thyme are great choices, depending on your climate.

Dig out your lawn and replace it with beds of flowering, native plants.

Replace your lawn with edible plants and fruit-bearing trees.

Before you dig in, consult the <a href="http://xerces.org/pollinator-conservation/plant-lists/">Xerces Society</a> database to find beautiful, native, pollinator-friendly plant species that will thrive in your local climate.

Seating

Vacation is all about kicking back and relaxing. In which case, you’ll need plenty of seating. Take a load off with a super comfy hammock, or feel light as a feather on a zero gravity lounger (seriously, it’s like floating on a cloud). You’ll also want to get a daybed so you catch up on your rest or escape for some much-needed alone time. That way, you won’t have to go inside and miss out on the sunshine as you snooze.

Shade

A sweet summer staycay isn’t complete without plenty of sun. Which also means you’ll need plenty of shade.
