Anna Harrington, owner of <a data-cke-saved-href="https://www.theroundsnyc.com/" href="https://www.theroundsnyc.com/">The Rounds,</a> a New York City–based cookie company, began making these sweet bites nearly a decade ago. “We never made sugar cookies growing up; we made pepparkakor, or Swedish ginger cookies,” she says. “So I researched recipes online and tweaked them to end up with my perfect sugar cookie. The texture is as important as the flavor.”

For Cookies 4 cups all-purpose flour 3 sticks butter 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1 egg 2 tsp. vanilla
For Icing 2 tbsp. milk 1 cup powdered sugar Food coloring, if desired

Pumpkin Crème Brûlée

2 cups heavy cream 
3/4 cup whole milk 
1 tsp vanilla extract 
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 
4 large egg yolks 
1/2 cup granulated sugar, plus 4 tsp 
1 cup solid pumpkin puree

Notes:

This dessert is gluten free and the custard can be made four days ahead. Just brûlée before serving.

Anna Harrington found her way to food through art and fashion. A painter in her 20s, she had a host of culinary and catering projects, then in her 30s, she branched off to design bags and other accessories for India Hicks and Isaac Mizrahi (among other fashion designers).&nbsp;

Her roots in entertaining run deep. Anna’s Swedish mother Louise was a grande dame of entertaining in her day, and Anna and her sister were well-trained in the art of hosting. They routinely dressed up to serve at parties for the luminaries of The Hague and Washington, D.C. Now living in Brooklyn with her husband and two boys, Anna spends most of her days operating <a href="https://www.theroundsnyc.com/">The Rounds,</a> her baked goods company. The perfectly bite-size discs, infused with ingredients such as cheese, salami, fresh cracked pepper, and rosemary, are a huge hit with the New York society set and among those in the fashion world. The savory ones have interesting combinations like anchovy scallion and apricot pistachio fennel; the sweet butter cookies have pretty custom color palettes (and, of course, butter!). They are totally addictive.

Cookies Don’t Fall Far from the Tree 
Anna muses, “Growing up in Holland, everyone serves cheese crackers at events—they are always on hand before any dinner or cocktail party. My mother loved these cheese crackers and frequented specific bakeries that made her favorites. When I was with her in the Netherlands two years ago, a few months before starting my business, she hand-carried a large bag filled with her precious cheese crackers on the plane ride back to the States.”

Having a Job vs. Having a Business&nbsp; 
When asked what it’s like to run a small business, Anna explains, “It’s a tricky juggling act because I rarely have time away from the business. I work Monday through Friday and most weekends. But I’m so much happier now in my work than I was before and get home earlier in the evening, usually by 5:30 p.m. I can focus on the kids until their bedtime, then I usually go back to painting the sweets. I think my kids are pretty proud of me—they comment on how hard I am working and they respect that. My older son tells me I need more employees ASAP. I have to tell him to cool his jets.”

The Youngest Critic 
Anna notes, “Casper, 10, loves to cook, both on his own and alongside me; we develop recipes together. He isn't able to help me make the Rounds anymore now that I work from a commercial kitchen and have to maintain professional standards for production. But he is still my No. 1 taste tester. His favorite is cheddar chive. My son Ben, 12, is beyond obsessed with the sweets. He has become a connoisseur and gives me very specific critiques.”

The Sweets Life&nbsp; 
“I began making these sweet cookies about 10 years ago,” Anna says. “We never made sugar cookies growing up; we made pepparkakor, Swedish ginger cookies. I researched recipes online and tweaked them to end up with my perfect one. The texture is as important as the flavor. Originally, I made various shapes and images and all sorts of things for my kids and friends. Then about eight years ago when my husband, Tim Harrington, started writing and illustrating children’s books, I made the three round sizes in various colors for his book launch parties. I made hundreds of them and stacked them up as I do now—people went bonkers for them.”

“Painting the colors takes me back to my painting days, both experientially and conceptually. My abstract paintings were all about color, cells, and energy on a microscopic level. Somehow the round shapes with blocks of solid color in my cookies evoke similar feelings for me. I really enjoy the meditation of mixing the colors and painting the cookies for long hours.”
