You probably have a handle on the “official” packing-for-college list—you know your child will need sheets, and clothes, and hangers, and a desk lamp—but did you think of ear plugs? What about bed risers? (Note: Bed risers are not permitted on many campuses; please check your school guidelines.) Conveniences like these might not be on your radar, but they make all the difference in smoothing their transition to dorm life. Here are 10 often-overlooked essentials to include in your packing plans.

Winter Coat

You may be packing during the dog days of August, but if your undergrad is heading to a chilly place it’s a good idea to bring along winter gear, because warm, heavy clothing can be expensive to ship later. While you’re at it, throw in a raincoat and rain or snow boots (items that are often sold out when someone *cough cough* realizes they’re needed).

Party Clothes

College life is also about meeting new people, and your social butterfly will not want to miss out on those theme parties and formals. Don’t leave those Hawaiian shirts and cocktail dresses behind. Raid the Halloween storage before you pack! Grab an underbed bin to keep it all organized in between costume events.

Ear Plugs and Noise-Canceling Headphones

The former will help your student sleep while a roommate is snoring or neighbors are tromping through the hall after a night out. The latter make studying in a shared room or library a lot easier.

Bedroom Storage Hacks

Dorm-room storage is notoriously nonexistent. Raising the bed a few inches off the floor opens up a surprisingly large space for suitcases, extra bedding, and off-syllabus recreational reading. (Please see your school guidelines before installing bed risers, as some campuses don’t allow them.)

3 steps to better sleep

We can all agree on this: the day goes better when you get a solid night’s sleep. It’s not just a feeling: The Centers for Disease Control report that people who routinely sleep less than seven hours a night are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, obesity, stroke, depression, and a host of other chronic diseases. If you would like to improve your sleep, start here.

1. review and renew your bedding

Whatever your sleep needs and style, there’s a type of bedding for you. You can find cooling sheets and mattress toppers if you <a href="https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/blogs/story/what-type-of-sleeper-are-you">sleep “hot,”</a> weighted blankets to ease anxiety, even Benzoil-peroxide-treated pillowcases that resist discoloration from acne treatments, so you don’t lose sleep worrying about staining your pillows.

Start by laying off caffeine after noon. If you like a warm drink at night, try soothing chamomile tea. Dim your lights and darken screens a couple of hours before bedtime. Not only will you minimize sleep-disrupting blue light, you will avoid getting wound up by suspenseful dramas and world news. Curl up with a book and an electric heating pad instead of bingeing on Netflix. Or take a hot bath with relaxing essential oils like lavender. Experiment with what works for you. Even if you dedicate just a few minutes to caring for yourself and slowing down your body at bedtime, you’ll be rewarded with a better night’s sleep.
