Lyocell® is a form of rayon made from wood pulp that is cool to the touch and feels smooth.

This is a fiber made from beech tree pulp. Modal is resistant to pilling and shrinking, which means it holds up well when washed. It also retains its colors, and it stays soft and silky. One thing to keep in mind with Modal is that it can’t take the high heat of washers and dryers. It’s best to wash and dry on low temperatures.

Synthetic is an umbrella term to include any human-made material, such as polyester. Polyester is one of the most common synthetic materials used in sheets. Polyester sheets are resistant to wrinkles, but they aren’t as breathable or as soft as cotton. Polyester is more likely to develop fabric nubs as well.

As its name suggests, it’s&nbsp;made from bamboo stalks. They have a natural fiber base, and there’s a manufacturing process that makes them soft and smooth. They are breathable as they’re designed to have holes. Unfortunately, these sheets wrinkle very easily and aren’t that durable.

The weave also has an impact on how sheets feel. A weave refers to how the material used in the product interlaces with the fabric. The threads going lengthwise are the warps, and the threads going crosswise are the wefts.

<h4>percale</h4>

<a href="https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/category/bedding/sheets-pillowcases/sheet-sets/15415/_percale/c19mX2JpbldlYXZlOiJQZXJjYWxlIg==">Percale sheets</a> are woven with one thread going under and one thread going over. Sheets with this weave are very strong and last a long time. If the softness isn’t to your liking, you may have to wash it a few times to soften the sheet.

<h4>sateen</h4>

Not to be confused with satin sheets, this weave pattern puts most of the threads on the surface. However, like satin, the <a href="https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/category/bedding/sheets-pillowcases/sheet-sets/15415/_sateen/c19mX2JpbldlYXZlOiJTYXRlZW4i">sateen weave</a> is exceptionally soft, but it’s somewhat less durable than the percale weave.&nbsp;Sateen weave gives the sheet a smooth feel with a subtle sheen.&nbsp;Due to its unique weaving pattern, it produces a satiny and sumptuous finish.

<h4>jacquard</h4>

This is an extremely complex pattern, and sheets with this weave are created with a special loom. It also has a variety of textures, and since it’s woven, you’ll be able to feel the pattern.

are you looking for fabric with less of an environmental impact?

Organic cotton sheets have less of an environmental impact as it’s grown without pesticides. Cotton that isn’t grown organically uses chemical defoliants to aid in harvesting.

Thankfully, there are companies out there, such as OEKO-TEX®, that enable consumers and companies alike to make responsible decisions. They help make sustainability easy. OEKO-TEX® has several set standards, such as their MADE IN GREEN label. This label lets consumers know what materials were tested for harmful substances.

what thread count do you want?

While thread count is only one part of the equation, one way to evaluate the sheets you’re considering is to look at this number. The thread count counts the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Both horizontal and vertical threads are counted. So, what is a good thread count for sheets? A <a href="https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/category/bedding/sheets-pillowcases/sheet-sets/15415/_700/c19mX2JpblRocmVhZF9Db3VudDoiNzAwICsi">high thread count</a> typically means that the sheets are more durable and are more likely to soften over time.

Other factors to consider are the type of fiber, how it’s finished, and the yarn’s size. Some fabrics, such as <a href="https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/category/bedding/sheets-pillowcases/sheet-sets/15415/_jersey-knit-t-shirt-cotton/c19mX1NoZWV0c19NYXRlcmlhbDoiSmVyc2V5IGtuaXQvVC1TaGlydCBjb3R0b24i">Jersey or “T-sheets,”</a> are knitted and won’t have a thread count as they aren’t woven.

Here, she answers all our burning, sleep-deprived questions. <h3>How do you know when it’s time for a new mattress?</h3>Get a new one if yours is sagging, lumpy, asymmetrical, causes congestion, or if you wake up many mornings feeling pain and stiffness. Also, consider getting a new mattress every 7 to 10 years. I know! But we buy cars more frequently than we do mattresses, and we spend 1/3 of our lives in bed. Although sometimes I feel like I spend 1/2 of my life in my car. I’m sure many of you can relate to that! <h3>Okay, you’ve convinced us. Where do you start?</h3>Focus on comfort first and foremost – softer isn’t always better, nor is firmer. You want something that will properly support your spine, as too soft can lead to sagging and much too firm can cause uncomfortable pressure points on your back. Gentle support is key. And keep in mind that there can be some variety in firmness ratings between companies. One might say something is firm, but for another company, it might be extra firm. <h3>What about all the different styles out there?</h3>There are so many! That’s why it’s important to really research them and try them out, if possible. There’s Latex, memory foam, air beds, innerspring mattresses ¬– even waterbeds! For example, some people love memory foam because you feel like you’re being cradled and it can take pressure off pain points, as well as minimize the feeling of a bed partner moving. But other people aren’t fans of memory foam because it can run warm, create body indentations, or have an odor that needs to wear off. This is not the case with all of them! <h3>Is there a mattress you recommend for people who tend to sleep on the warm side?</h3>Think about the mattress: Does it retain heat or is it cooling in nature? If you wake up warm, look for mattresses with coils, latex, or cooling agents. <h3>What if you and your partner have totally different sleep habits?</h3>If you awaken one another at night, think about motion isolation/control. Does your mattress have good edge support to help you use the entire surface of the bed and not slip off the side? Also, don’t compromise on your comfort – try to find something in the middle that you both like. Medium-firm works for many people, but there are also customizable mattresses that allow each of you to have what you like, firmness-wise, on your own side. Some people will even get two completely different mattresses and push them together and connect them with a mattress bed bridge. So many options! <h3>How much should you spend on a mattress?</h3>It can be easy to spend way more than necessary. Figure out your budget and really stay within it, if possible. Know the size of the bed that you want as well so you can keep that in the budget. Try not to rush into the decision process – really take your time, if you can. <h3>Is there a unicorn mattress out there that’s perfect for everyone?</h3>Despite what you may hear, there’s no one-size-fits-all. What one person says is the best mattress for everyone is indeed not the case. Everyone is built differently and sleeps in different positions and there’s so much individual preference out there. Also, it can take upwards of a month to get used to a new mattress, so definitely look at the return policy and get something that’s flexible for your needs and that you can try it out. Here, she answers a few of your most-popular questions. <h3>I’m a stomach sleeper, and every pillow feels too big and hurts my neck. Thoughts?</h3> Some stomach sleepers choose to sleep without a pillow at all, but a flat, soft pillow under the head is also good. And placing a relatively flat pillow under the pelvis can help with alignment, too.

<h3>Back sleeper, here. Is a soft or firm pillow best?</h3> Back sleepers typically need a flatter pillow to keep the neck and back in alignment. If you have neck pain, consider a pillow that’s more supportive. You just don’t want it to be so thick that it pushes your head up and forward too much.

<h3>What pillow do you recommend for side sleepers?</h3> You need a firmer, little bit thicker pillow. It should have an extra-wide gusset which helps fill in that space between the ear and shoulder, lending extra support for your neck and head. Also, side sleepers should think about putting a pillow between their knees. This is extremely helpful for any back pain.

<h3>I have a hard time falling asleep. Any secrets?</h3> For me, it’s blackout curtains for certain, but it’s also important to pay attention to noise and temperature. Dr. Shelby Harris’s sleep tips for new partners

Marriage comes with lots of compromises! For many newlyweds, cohabitation may be a new thing and getting accustomed to their partner’s individual sleep style can be daunting. Here are a few tips to help smooth the transition to more restful nights. 1. If you and your bed partner have different preferences in mattress qualities (e.g. you like it softer or a memory foam mattress and partner likes a traditional firm spring mattress), consider the mattress that you currently have and love. While there are many wonderful mattresses on the market that can accommodate two different sleeper preferences on each side, consider having two twin mattresses with a mattress connector. This way you both get what you’d like! Keep in mind that queen and king mattresses may be a few inches longer than two twins pushed together, so if that’s an issue, you may want to consider a twin extra-long mattress instead.

Good sleep makes everything better: your mood, heart health, memory, even your immune system. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of shut-eye a night to maintain health and happiness. We asked Dr. Shelby Harris, psychologist and board-certified behavioral sleep expert, for tips on how to get more restful sleep.

optimize your environment

Light is a common sleep stealer. Make sure you have light-blocking shades as the brain can sense even the faintest bit of light peeking through your curtains on a sunny morning.

A quiet sleep space helps set the stage for sleep. A white noise machine, silicone earplugs, or even noise-canceling earbuds can all help keep your bedroom quiet.

Allergies can lead to congestion and snoring, disrupting sleep quality. Make sure to use hypoallergenic bedding and consider an air purifier in your room – even some popular household plants are known for their ability to purify the air.

choose the right sheets

If you prefer a simple bed, go with crisp, light percale sheets that feel unfussy and uncomplicated. If you’re a cold sleeper, soft and silky textures that feel amazing will invite you into your bed. Think cotton sateen sheets that are smooth and lovely to the touch.

find a supportive pillow

Fluffy, warm down comforters are the ultimate in comfort, but make sure to layer your bed so you don’t get too warm at night. Multiple layers (sheets, blankets, down comforter) will help keep you cool and deepen your sleep.

Eye masks are popular and help keep the light out, especially on mornings when the sun comes up far earlier than you’d like. Find one with an appealing texture and weight, and if it has a fun pattern on the outside, even better. If wearing a mask feels strange at first, wear it a bit during the day to get used to the feeling.

Sleep is not an on/off switch, and it’s best to set the stage for relaxation by practicing a brief evening mindfulness session before bedtime. Create a simple space in your room where you can sit for 5-10 minutes to relax, practice a self-led or guided meditation, and let your brain settle down for sleep. Reading, knitting, restorative yoga, and gentle stretching are all great ways to wind down as well.

A hot shower or bath helps warm you up inside and out. Make sure to do so 1.5 to 2 hours before lights out, to give your body time to cool down and allow your brain’s melatonin to start working.

While you might love a cup of herbal decaffeinated tea in the evening, try to be mindful of your liquid consumption as it can lead to middle-of-the-night bathroom trips. Try to cut off liquids 3 hours before bedtime. If you really want that cup of tea, limit it to 1 small cup in the hours before bed.
