If your budget is tight, a two-week European adventure is probably not in the cards this year. If the sky’s the limit, well, lucky you: You have many choices.

If you can be flexible, that’s helpful. Most of us have a lot of different types of vacations and destinations on your list. Time to do some research. This feature gives you a great deal on a hotel, but the catch is, you won’t know what hotel it is until you book it. And you only have 15 minutes to decide whether you want to book. This is great for travelers who aren’t too picky when it comes to lodging.

Don’t Try to Do Too Much

If the planning of it all is overwhelming you, don’t plan to do much. Some of the best vacations involve a lot of relaxation and down time. How to Plan the Perfect Road Trip

Ah, the summer road trip. About 36 million Americans will embark on one this summer, according to a <a href="https://newsroom.aaa.com/2019/03/100-million-americans-will-embark-on-family-vacations/">recent AAA travel survey.</a> On one hand, it’s probably the best way to see the sights of any region and create amazing family memories. On the other, it offers the possibility of different kinds of memories—long hours of driving, kids fighting in the back seat, everyone getting hangry between meal stops… you get the picture.&nbsp;

How to ensure your getaway resembles the former and not the latter? Good planning (and enough flexibility to get off the beaten path from time to time). Here’s what you need to know.

Planning Basics 
Create an itinerary. There are nearly endless options for amazing U.S. road trips, long and short. Depending where you live, you might drive up the East Coast, visiting seaside gems from Stonington, Conn. to Portsmouth, N.H.. Or, you could tour Civil War battle sites, from Gettysburg, Penn. to Manassas, Va. Music fans might opt to drive between hotspots like Nashville, New Orleans, and Austin. &nbsp;

Of course, national parks are always on the menu, from Yellowstone to the Great Smoky Mountains. Or you might try a drive up the Pacific Coast from San Francisco to Seattle. Whichever route you choose, it’s smart to pad your itinerary, so you’re not racing from destination to destination. And prioritize, so if you spend extra time in one place, you know what to cut from the list.&nbsp;

Pick a mode of transportation. Will you drive your own car or a rental? Or rent or borrow an RV or trailer? Would it make sense to fly a leg or two? If you’re planning to drive your own car, be sure to get it serviced ahead of time, including having the tires checked.

Book your accommodations. First you have to decide whether you’ll stay hotels/motels, or at campsites. If it’s the latter, will you <a href="https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/blogs/story/go-to-guide-camping">be camping</a> in a tent, an RV, or a trailer? Book ahead to make sure you have a place to stay each night (and an RV hook-up if you need one)—the summer is typically the busiest travel time, so you might be out of luck if you leave the decision to the last minute.

Set a budget. Create a daily or weekly spending budget for hotels or campsite fees, gas, tolls, park or site entrance fees, food, and other incidentals. Plan a contingency fee, in case you end up having to pay for car repairs or fleeing a rain-soaked tent for a hotel.

Pack the Right Stuff 
Start with clothes and personal items. No matter how you travel (by car or RV, staying in hotels or in a tent) you’ll need layers of clothing—don’t forget rain gear!—and toiletries. Upgrading your luggage can help you store more in less space; zippered organizers can help separate clean and dirty items once you’re en route (or keep wardrobe items for different legs of the trip separate); and a hanging toiletries case makes it easy to see everything you need, even if you’re glamming in a tiny bathroom.

Add camping or RVing gear. If you’re driving to tent sites you’ll of course need a waterproof tent, an insulated sleeping bag, a sleeping pad (a foam mattress topper is adds softness and rolls up for storage), a camp stove, and camp cooking gear. If you’re RVing, you’ll need a different set of essentials: bedding, towels, cookware, food storage containers, utensils, dishes, outdoor furniture, and more. 
&nbsp;

Remember tech and other practicalities. Pack a phone charger (and an adapter that lets you charge multiple devices at one time), a hands-free mount for your phone, and portable chargers for when you’re away from your car or hotel room. Take paper money and coins for vending machines and parking meters. 
&nbsp;

Make car time fun for everyone. Whether you’re alone, driving as a couple, or with the entire family, long hours on the road feel like a trip to dullsville. Before you leave your home or hotel WiFi connection, download podcasts, audio books, or music playlists. Pack travel games for the kids. And don’t forget snacks and drinks—if the lunch spot you’d planned on has a line a mile long and you can’t find another for three hours, you’ll be happy you have an energy bar to munch on in the meantime. It’s also handy to have a kit of non-food car essentials like handy wipes, hand sanitizer, trash bags, toilet paper, and a first aid kit.&nbsp;

Be Smart about Safety 
Don’t forget documentation. Make sure you have your driver’s license (and passport if you’ll be crossing borders), car registration, insurance card, car manual, and a phone number for roadside assistance.

Bring a car safety kit. You can assemble your own or buy one ready-made. Either way, it should include jumper cables, a waterproof flashlight, duct tape, a tarp or poncho, reflective items, tools, etc. If you’re traveling in a remote location where you can’t rely on a cell signal to call for help, or on a nearby gas station it’s smart to pack the following: a quart of oil, coolant or water, wiper fluid, and a spare tire and jack (that you know how to use). Also, be sure you have two keys to the car or RV—and don’t keep them on the same key ring!

Pack a paper map. Yes, your phone has a map and your car may have GPS, but phone signals can vary (and disappear in remote areas) and GPS could falter.&nbsp;

Have a social media strategy. As much fun as it is to post your pictures of Niagara Falls or Half Dome the second you take them, your innocent sharing can be used for nefarious purposes: by burglars waiting for the opportunity to break into an empty house. Don’t post about travel plans before you go, and wait to post your pictures until you’re safely home. While you’re at it, turn off location services (so others can’t see you’re away), and dial back tagging settings, so if a co-traveler tags you in a picture, it doesn’t show up on your feed, potentially identifying your location. Make sure the whole family is on board with this plan!

Sometimes you just need to get away—from the city, from your home, from work, from your phone, from everything. Spending time in the great outdoors is one of the best things you can do for yourself. You can reset, recharge, and be at one with nature. It’s an opportunity to ditch technology in favor of scenery, to go hiking outdoors instead of to the gym, and to fall asleep under the stars instead of to the sound of the TV. You can go alone, or you can go with family or friends. Trust us, you’ll never forget the experience. While it’s easy to romanticize a camping trip, there’s also a lot about it that’s intimidating. That’s why it’s essential to prepare. Once you’ve done that, there’s no reason you can’t have a great adventure. Now let’s get to planning.

Decide What Kind of Camping Trip You Want to Take

You’ve got options:

You can decide to take a traditional camping trip, where you BYO tent, find a spot at the campground, and set up your temporary abode.

You can choose a camping spot where your sleeping arrangements are set up for you. Some even offer a set menu of prepared foods, access to potable water, a cooler with ice, and grilling tools with a fire starter kit.

You can rent an RV, park it, and sleep there. Often there are communal amenities such as grills, fire pits, showers, and recreational areas with access to beaches, lakes, and fishing.

Or you can go glamping, where lodgings can include full beds, massages, Wi-Fi, and prepared meals. If you dream it, it’s probably out there.

Find a Campsite

Decide where and when you’re going. You know that co-worker who’s always talking about their off-the-grid adventures? This is a good opportunity to chat this person up. Also, talk to friends and family who have been to your dream camping destinations, and learn the pros and cons. What’s the space like? What’s the bathroom situation? What’s there to do nearby? Any rules or caveats you need to pay attention to, like, uh, lots of rattlesnakes, bears, or clouds of biting flies?

There are online resources that can help you find your ideal campsite. Check out <a href="https://www.hipcamp.com/">Hipcamp</a>, which helps people find camping experiences with all kinds of features and activities in all kinds of locations (horse camp, anyone?). And, there’s <a href="https://www.tentrr.com/">Tentrr</a>, which allows you to book a campsite on private land, with your tent already set up. Amenities include a fire pit, Adirondack chairs, a wood stove, and a queen-size bed. Not bad!

Prepare to Sleep Outside

To make your camping experience comfortable and enjoyable, you’ll need to be prepared with the right gear. After all, you’re sleeping, cooking your meals, eating, and cleaning up after yourself (unless you want to meet aforementioned bears). You’ll also need equipment for all those activities you plan to do (hiking, fishing, picnicking).

Tent

If you’re going the traditional route, you’ll want to bring your own tent to the campsite. Tents come in varying sizes and offer different features, such as light-blocking technology or extra protection from the rain. Some tents are made to withstand different seasons. Some have “shelving” or mesh pockets to keep books, flashlights, and toiletries, but in terms of comfort, they’re all pretty similar to one another and bare bones. That’s what you came out into nature for, remember? Definitely bring the instructions with you, and if you have time, try pitching the tent at home before you go so that you’re not totally lost once you arrive.
One recommendation: If you can, size up. Two of you will be more comfortable in a four-person tent, and four will be more comfortable in a tent that sleeps six.

Sleeping Gear

Sleeping bags have a lot of variability. Some are meant for one person, others for two. Some are meant for use during the summer, while others are meant for freezing temps. And there are those that are suitable for both warm and cold weather. Depending on where you’re going, you’ll want to plan accordingly.

If you really want to level up the whole experience, there are sleeping mats, air mattresses, and even beds that can go inside your tent. Have we mentioned this pastime has come a long way?

Plan Your Meals

How long are you going to be gone? What are you planning to eat while you’re away? You may be staying close to a town with restaurants and not planning to cook every meal. Or you may want to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all at the campsite. You’ll also need snacks!

Plan your camp side meals, and make a shopping list, down to the spices. Consider bringing items that don’t need to be refrigerated. Apples, nut butters, and trail mix make great snacks that won’t take up precious cooler space. S’more fixings also don’t need to be kept on ice. Use a cooler to keep meat (for dinner, plus deli meats and cheeses for lunch), veggies, and condiments. Depending on which cooler you own, you’ll need to restock your ice sooner, so make sure you know where the nearest convenience store is.

Pro Tip: It’s important to keep food stored and covered to avoid attracting wildlife. Some campers use bear-proof food storage boxes or their locked vehicles, or even hang their foodstuffs in a bag from a tree branch. Never, ever keep food in your tent. It’s also best to avoid cooking bacon and fish, two potent items that send a signal that the kitchen is open!

You’ll also need cooking equipment. Unless you’re well-versed in cooking over an open fire (and your campsite allows it), opt for a propane grill. We like this one because it’s collapsible and has two adjustable burners. Take some grill tools and cookware with you as well, and don’t forget skewers for marshmallows! If you can’t live without your morning coffee, you might want to take along a Camping Percolator. As for those unwanted animals, keep them at bay by cleaning your cookware after using them.

Next up: You’ll need things to eat with and something to eat on. Bring bowls, plates, and cutlery. If your campsite doesn’t have picnic tables, bring collapsible chairs or a blanket with you.

Don’t Forget Drinks

In addition to your cooler for food, you’ll probably want to bring one for juices, sodas, and other drinks. A portable water filter also isn’t a bad thing to have around.
