Theodor Seuss Geisel was the real name of the beloved children's author and cartoonist best known as Dr. Seuss. Geisel published 46 children's books filled with imaginative characters, engaging illustrations, word play and rhyme; his birthday, March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read Across America Day, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. In May, 1954 Life magazine published a report on illiteracy among school children which concluded that children were not learning to read because their books were boring; Geisel worked with a word list of 348 words identified as important for first?graders to recognize and incorporated 236 of the words into the iconic children's book The Cat in the Hat.
