First and foremost, always remember when it comes to mirrors: bigger is definitely better. To maximize a mirror’s impact and create a focal point, consider going a bit larger than you normally would. When you go a little larger, it creates a dramatic piece, continues the line of vision, and visually expands the space. Next, positioning is key. While mirrors can make a space feel larger due to the reflection of light – if you don’t have windows in a particular space, positioning the mirror near your light fixture will help to achieve a similar effect. You should also always position a mirror across from a room’s entryway when possible – this is a greeting technique that helps to make small entryways or hallways feel more expansive. As with any wall hanging: do not hang it too high. Although you want to draw the eye upward to make ceilings appear higher, people shouldn’t have to stretch to be able to see in the mirror either. The size of the mirror, not the height, is what will make the room feel larger. There are no strict rules when decorating with mirrors, but a helpful tip is to complement and contrast. For example, if you have a lot of angular spaces, go with a round mirror to soften them, or if you have a very simple and clean décor, choose an ornate mirror to add personality. Lastly, protect your prized possession. Mirrors can be pricey – if you have a large, heavy mirror it is worth hiring someone to come in and properly mount the mirror. However, mirrors are very low maintenance and are best when left alone. If they happen to get dusty, use a simple feather duster to lightly clean it, when hung you shouldn’t have to be cleaning fingerprints regularly (and that’s a win).
