Braun® BT5090 Beard Trimmer

I have a close cropped beard, The trimmer attachment permits me to dial in precisely 3 milimetrers.

I have been a Braun shaver user for about 15 years. When I needed to replace my beard trimmer, I decided that I would look at Braun. One of the features was a dual battery to keep constant smooth power to the trimmer motor. That does not occur! When using the trimmer the motor is weak and the power modulates. It is frustrating. The trimmer also does not do a very good job of trimming and several passes are required. The good thing is that the trimmer blades do not "bite" the skin when trimming the mustache and neck. Replaced it with a Panasonic, which is doing an excellent job.

I purchased the trimmer to cut my beard, which I have had for over 30 years and keep reasonably short. The Braun's comb teeth are a little too far apart and the gap between the top a bottom comb is also a bit too wide. As a result, it requires several passes to get all the hairs cut evenly. I have not yet found a beard razor that cuts better than the Remington MB-200. The big advantage the Braun has is the ability to plug it in and use it if the battery dies. The battery life of the Braun is also the best on the market; the charge lasts for months.

I had been looking around for a quality beard trimmer to replace an old Norelco/Philips, ended up buying both the newer Norelco (model BT7215 with hair collection) and this Braun. Even though I miss the hair collection feature, I've found the Braun to be better for these reasons: - Overall quality: The Braun is well designed, feels solidly built and fits your hand well. The Norelco feels cheaper and plastic, and the heads feel flimsy. - Features: The Braun has a nicely shaped beard comb vs the flat comb of the Norelco. The Braun has a handy slide-out detail trimmer, whereas on the Norelco you have to change heads to use a detail trimmer, and the heads are a bit tricky to snap on. - Hair collection: This is the only advantage of the Norelco, though to clean out the hair you have to remove the cutting head. - Battery life: Both have great battery life, I've only had to charge once in the last four months. So if you are looking for a higher quality trimmer that feels good in your hand go with the Braun.
