I purchased an oven thermometer to test this oven and found that once the preheat function has completed it's cycle, the oven is NOT heated to the temperature selected. It took another 15-18 minutes for the oven to get close to the temperature I had selected (350 degrees). With that in mind, this oven will take about 20 minutes to get to the set temperature...and probably will take longer for a higher temperature selection. If you can live with that, once heated to temperature you set, it performs well.
My main use for a toaster oven is to reheat rolls, pastries, and other foods that I don't want to put in a microwave. I rarely use it to cook or bake. I discovered that when I reheated food at the temperature used with my old toaster oven - a different brand - it was not hot enough. I used an oven thermometer to check the temperature and found it was generally 25F degrees less than I'd set. I thought it was defective so exchanged the toaster oven for another. Same thing happened. I contacted Breville and was told this is normal. To avoid having food overcooked the oven tries to reach but not go over the set temperature, meaning it is often cooler than the target temp. I found when I set the temperature 25 degrees higher my food came out all right. It is also the case that the preheating signal goes off when the temperature is about 75% of the target, again by design. Timing has to be adjusted to allow for this, since the oven will be much cooler than expected if the food is put in then. The toaster oven has some nice features, such as a memory for the temperature and time last used, so I might recommend it for anyone willing to adjust to these quirks.

Simple but major flaw....no "add 10 seconds" button. The mini had this button...and i miss it so much. No two pieces of toast are the same....this simple button allowed me to adjust the "doneness". With the compact, if i need more time i need to restart the cycle...which would obviously burn the toast. I have the ability to adjust the time with the knob...but this is a royal pia. I wish i could trade back to the mini. Other than that...good oven.

Just got my Breville Compact Smart Oven. After running mandatory pre-heat to get rid of manufacturing chemicals, I put in a .6 lb Center cut salmon. Set it bake to 400 degrees and ran 15 mins. Oven would have been 425 degrees for 25 mins (not very efficient regular electric oven). Salmon perfection. Looking forward to more use. Glad I opted for the Compact over the mini. Agree with another writer that it would be nice to have the wrack have a stop gap as it slides out but I was prepared.

Second oven that we own like this one. Very happy with the function. The top of the oven has a slight film and discoloration. We think it is left over residue from the plastic liner that it ships with. We have not been able to get it cleaned off.

Recently I’ve tried several models/brands of toaster ovens and air fryer toaster ovens trying to replace one that has worked well for so long. The Breville Compact Smart Oven is the only one to heat accurately and toast evenly. My only concern is the selector dial that must be turned a lot to choose temperature, time, etc. It seems so flimsy; I’m wondering if it will last. Hoping for the best as I do like this oven.

I have had this oven for about a month now and have used it to bake, reheat and toast and find it to be very capable. My previous oven (a different brand) was horrible with toasting but this one works like a charm. I have several recipes that I use for baking and have been very pleased with the ease of controls. Very happy with my purchase.

I bought this to replace a 2 slice toaster and am very glad I did. It is a compact size that easily fits on our counter and has all the basic functionality that I need. It is easy to clean with the pull-out crumb drawer and the stainless steel finish looks great. So far I have used it to toast bread, toast bagels, and English muffins, broil to reheat pizza (very nice crisp taste), and bake a few cookies. The interface is simple and easy to use. I would recommend this smart oven.

I use this oven at least once a day for toasting, making oven french fries, or reheating homemade meats and casseroles. I don't buy prepackaged frozen food or pizza. The oven works very well and features are easy to set. I replaced the thermostat in my original Breville oven myself (yipe!) when it blew and it worked another 7 years. I wish it was easier to fix (fewer screws, easier access to the thermostat.) The size is perfect. This complements a double wall oven and microwave in the kitchen.

We have had our toaster oven over 6 years, (it has made it thru 3 moves) for the last year once in a while the heat temperature would fail and had to cook longer but that was not a big issue just cooked our meal longer. We used the bake the most, broil, toast, bagel where the functions we use as well. Today while broiling some bacon it stop functioning. Completely dead won't even turn on. We are sad but very satisfy with our purchase.
