When the toaster first arrived the lift function during the cycle did not work, but it toasted just fine and lifted at the end of the cycle. The next morning, the lift function did not work at all. I had to dump my perfectly toasted bread and the crumbs out on my counter by flipping it upside down. I was not happy. I decided to give them one more try and BBB replaced it with no problems. The second toaster has worked perfectly since it arrived about a month ago. The " A BIT MORE" button is awesome. It allows me to cook my toast the way I want it and then just a little darker for my husband without overdoing it. I had to give it 4 stars Overall/Quality because the first one was defective, and on Value because of the crazy price. For someone that loves toast and bagels as much as I do, I am very glad I gave them a second chance.
This is the third of 3 replacement toasters. It is an absolutely beautifully crafted appliance. The near-silent toast transport mechanism is impressively "cool." Unfortunately, like the two previous toasters (replaced promptly by Breville), it fails at the one thing it is supposed to accomplish: make a piece of toast. All three models performed similarly, the first after a year of use, the other two new out of the box. The issue as I see it is that the inside heating elements barely turn on while the outside elements function normally, resulting in uneven toasting and burnt toast edges. When put in bagel mode the inside elements fire up normally, so clearly they are not defective. My guess is that the controller is somehow faulty. Since I can't properly make toast with it, I've given it one star. If it worked properly I would award it six stars, it's that nicely designed and built.

Toasters are toasters, right? Not when you start using a Breville Smart Toaster, which brings the perfect mix of functionality and convenience in a classy looking package. A friend just asked me if I like this toaster. I responded "I like the design, but it's buggy and doesn't always work correctly and only half the heating elements work - so unless you are cool with that......" It really shouldn't be listed as a top ten toaster, unless you just like to have a pretty silver box take up space on your kitchen counter.

Bought this toaster thinking it would be really good quality being die-cast and Breville. Very disappointed when one year later one element stopped working. After two years 3 of the 4 elements burnt out or stopped working. It is not a cheap toaster and should last longer than this.
