The new KitchenAid ice cream bowl attachment is easy to use and makes beautiful soft, scoopable ice cream quickly and without fuss. My kids are delighted!

I initially thought the drive mechanism didn't fit (new Artisan mixer, new ice cream bowl).The directions and illustrations show it being directly mated to the power head. It was only after some time (longer than it should have taken me) that I figured out it is a "wedge" that you slide on - the illustrations in the manual don't show this. Even then, it would fall off but if I held it in place it would easily mate with the dasher (paddle) and worked fine. My son can slide it on so it doesn't fall off - many woman don't have the hand strength to do this. When I finally reached the help line I had it working but was told they got lots of call for this and to hold the drive mechanism in place while lowering the tilt head. The other issue I see is there is not a LOUD warning to not put anything in the bowl until you actually turn it and start churning on else you can break the drive mechanism. You MUST wait to add your mixture until after you turn the machine on. Basically - the mixer/ice cream bowl works great but the directions suck and cause problems. This should be a simple fix by updating the online manual and sending copies to purchasers.

The part that attaches the paddle to the mixer snapped in half the second time I used it. I spent 35 minutes on hold for customer service before I had to hang up, and then I tried the virtual assistant online but had an 80 minute wait for customer service. So I submitted an email and it's supposed to be up to three days to get back. I considered requesting a replacement part, but I'm not convinced it's designed in a way that's sturdy enough to support the paddle. If it breaks again, dealing with KitchenAid customer service is very time-consuming. As much as I hoped this ice cream maker would be a home run considering the quality of all the other Kitchen products I've used for years, it's turning to be a headache and I'll be looking at other brands of ice cream makers.

First, let me state I have had Kitchen- Aid appliances for nearly all of my adult life and loved them. My stand mixer is 40+ years old and still going strong. However, I am disappointed in this product which I ordered and received in early December. In terms of use, it is easy! Yaay! Freeze the bowl/container, make up your ice cream recipe, put it in the bowl, and blend away. Worked great!! One time. The second time, it broke. The DRIVE ASSEMBLY which attaches to the mixer head and the dasher (the part that spins around churning your ice cream) is made of PLASTIC! One teeny little bit of being "off kilter" when I started the machine (full of my ice cream recipe) it SNAPPED IN TWO! This part of the assembly definitely needs to be made of metal!! And thus began trying to get warrantied assistance from Kitchen Aid. Granted, my problem occurred right after the big holiday rush so I get they were busy. But the call center number has NO OPTION for a call back; just keep listening to the Muzak! After TWO calls (during which my wait time was longer than I had) and an ineffective "chat" online with the virtual assistant, I called a THIRD time. After being on hold for 52 minutes, I finally spoke with a representative. Theoretically, I am getting an entirely new unit shipped to me in 7-10 days; I will get a pre-paid FedEx shipping label with which to return the original ice cream maker attachment. Hoping for the best on this; the replacement will arrive in 7-10 days. As I mentioned, I have always loved the Kitchen-Aid brand and talked it up to younger cooks. But this experience has damaged my opinion of the company. Hoping for better results with the replacement. Dairy Queen, here I come. Sigh.

Both the paddle and drive mechanicism are plastic, and they felt cheap in my hands when I opened the box. The third time I used this, the part that connects the paddle to the spin element snapped in two. It was Christmas night and we were really excited for homemade ice cream, so we just churned by hand for 20 minutes in the freezer bowl. Pathetic! Two stars since the the bowl is still usable, I guess 😭
