My fancy espresso maker died and I wasn't willing to pay $1700+ to replace it, so I bought this Kitchenaid instead. To my palate, the coffee it makes is comparable to that of the expensive machine. I use a Mini Mazzer grinder and whole dark roasted Kona beans. (I live on the Big Island of HI). The portafilter is a huge stainless honker with four baskets to choose from. The tamper is surprisingly heavy. The machine is cheap because the casing and water reservoir are plastic. I don't know how long that will last, but where I live metal oxidizes quickly, so durability of materials may be a comparative tossup. Anyway, I can buy seven Kitchenaids for the price of one fancy machine. Ost Most importantly, for now the coffee it makes is good with decent crema. I haven't yet tried the steamer wand.
I was so excited to get this machine (finally a "real" espresso maker) so the disappointment is even greater: I've spent the past 24 hours trying different coffee brands, different grinds, different water temperatures, different baskets, different amounts of coffee and the result has been the same: sour, undrinkable espresso. I looked up potential reasons for that online and found multiple suggestions but nothing is working. Only thing I can think of (and that I can't change cause the machine won't allow for it) is the water temperature or amount. (Once you're past the third setting of the water temperature adjuster, you can't go any further.) My machine takes only about 10 seconds (as opposed to the recommended 20) to make the shot and there seems to lie the problem: The espresso doesn't get extracted properly. But there is not setting to remedy that, just using a finer grind (tried it), increasing the tamping (tried it), use different espresso (tried it), use a different filter basket (tried it), increase amount of coffee (tried it). Nothing is making a difference. I don't know whether this is just the kind of coffee this machine produces or whether mine is faulty but either way I'm returning it and going back to my little Italian stovetop espresso maker. It makes much better espresso. The fact that 90% of the positive reviews for the machine were from folks who got an "incentive" for their "honest opinion" should have been a red flag.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This machine looks as robust as the KitchenAid mixer. The portafilter and tamper are of heavy construction. It heats up quick and lattes can be made in under five minutes. It was a good purchase.

The steam wand takes some practice, this is the second machine I bought. First of this brand and it was nice but tricky.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We replaced a full featured, much more expensive machine with this unit. It pulls a decent shot but it’s not very hot! The frother works well! It’s easy to set up, use and clean. The additional automatic frother is underwhelming. We were spoiled by our previous machine but for the price of this model, it is a good value.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This espresso machine works great. I was not ready to invest in an expensive professional grade espresso machine. I have several kitchen aid appliances and have been happy with the quality of the brand. After 6 weeks of daily use I am still happy with the purchase.

Unfortunately the portafilter is plastic inside. The Q&A response is not correct.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It’s like being in a cafe. Love it. My capaccino is perfect.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Steam wand is extremely weak, changing the grind, the dose and the volume of water is difficult and inaccurate

I was looking for a good, attractive and affordable machine to get started making espresso, and after using this for about a month, I believe this fits the bill very well. Just some comments: 1. I have the gray plastic model and I think it’s beautiful. I’ve seen a lot of comments from people saying they would only consider the metal version; if that fits your aesthetic better, then I understand. However, I don’t believe the build quality suffers at all, and for me, it wouldn’t be worth the extra cost. 2. Do yourself a favor and get a burr grinder capable of grinding espresso. It really makes a huge difference in flavor and quality and you don’t want to be limited to having only what’s available at the store or maybe a local shop. I have the matching kitchenaid burr grinder - I’ll have a separate review for that machine but I will just say, I’ve seen people say it’s not capable of espresso grind which I don’t agree with. I’ve dialed in very great espresso with it (in the non-pressurized basket) and I’ve also ground so fine that I’ve stopped my machine up. 3. I’ve seen mixed things on espresso quality (things such as crema) with this machine. If you’re using store-bought ground coffee, you have to use the pressurized basket. I used it at first and it produced an OK shot with crema, but nothing great. Take time to dial the machine in to your variables especially with the regular basket. 4. I’ve seen negative things about the steam wand - it works perfectly fine in my opinion. Don’t overfill the jug, and find the right spot. You can get tons of foam, you just have to know what you’re doing. Final comment about dialing this machine in: when I first started grinding my own coffee and using the regular basket, it was making horrible sour shots. It took me a lot of experimenting to dial it in. I changed grind sizes which didn’t help much. I lowered the water temp to the lowest (was on medium by default) and used filtered water and started getting drinkable shots. Then I finally realized you could adjust/re-program the amount of water used in your shot (by holding the start button while brewing) and that changed everything. I’m making really great espresso now. Which leads me to my ultimate criticism with this machine which is that it can be difficult to dial in because there are no gauges or any display to let you get readings. I understand it’s made to be minimal and simple, but it would be really nice to actually know water temp, pressure, water amount etc… This machine is obviously designed for the person who is just going to use store coffee in the pressurized basket to make flavored lattes which is totally fine. If you’re someone who leans a little more toward enthusiast level and wants to get started with espresso, good espresso can definitely be found here at a great price, but you will have to put some work in to get there.
