We've been eating steak a couple of times a month and the toughness of the cheap cuts gets tiresome after a while. I had heard of these devices and finally decided to check it out. After watching an OXO video on Youtube, I found this one at the local BB&B and (aided by one of their nice coupons) picked it up. It does an amazing job on the connective tissues in the steak. After about ten chops with the OXO, the meat is full of little cuts and has also flattened out somewhat. More on that later. I put the usual soy sauce and herbal rub on the meat, let it sit for an hour, then put it on the Foreman grill ( have not yet tried the outdoor grill, looking forward to it). The result: delicious! The flavorings soak more quickly into the interior of the meat, helping to soften it even more than the simple act of cutting through the connective tissue. This device is now my go-to beef treatment and I no longer feel nervous about picking up the "Manager's Special" $2.99 London top steak. It is almost guaranteed to be melt-in-your-mouth tender. Cleaning: I have only used it a few times but I find the blades easy enough to clean ad hoc. I just soap up a brush and brush the blades all around, and try to get the plastic base as clean as possible, using scalding water. You don't want to mess around with raw meat. You can also pop off the top and stick it in the top rack, which probably you should do every time you run your dishwasher, just to be safe. I only gave it 4 stars because I find the spring very stiff and so you have to give a lot of weight to extend the blades, thus pressing hard into the meat and flattening it. I would have preferred a lighter touch that doesn't flatten the meat like a pancake. All I can think is that they deliberately made it hard to use, to prevent children getting at the blades. Safety over usefulness, I guess. I'm already mulling the notion of finding a stainless steel spring of lesser springiness and swapping it out. But that minor glitch aside, this is a very useful product, and the construction seems very solid and slickly designed, as most OXO products seem to be. Highly recommended.
If there was a way to adjust the spring tension this would work great, but you have to use so much force to penetrate the meat and it doesn't matter what size you end up flattening the meat. Had to return this.

I’ve had one for a few years, it comes in very handy. I don’t like the fact that it is impossible to clean in between the blades thoroughly. Soaking it does help, but it needs to be built where you can clean the blades all the way to the base.
This makes an incredible difference. Even cheaper cuts of beef come out tender. I never cook chicken without tenderizing it 1st. I wish I had discovered this years ago.
I used this tenderizer for the first time last night. The chicken breast I used it on was tender and moist and it cooked faster!! I love it!
This worked great for several years. Then one day I couldn't get to unlock to use. I also noticed that it was very corroded at the to side causing the lock not to function. I do love the way it opened up the meat for marinating before grilling. Never had a bad piece of meat when used. I will get another soon. Wish I wouldn't have had to throw it away.
Too hard to clean
I bought this to help tenderize and help marinades penetrate into tough cuts of meat. I tried it on a beef sirloin steak that I knew was not very tender, but didn’t have time for a normal marinade. I used this tenderizer and a short dry-rub marinade of only about 20 minutes, and the resulting steak was very tender and flavorful, without the pulpy feel you can get from some chemical tenderizers. I’ll surely keep this in the front of my cooking implement drawer.

This meat tenderizer worked great on the steak we cooked on the grill.
