Frequently Asked Questions

These questions have been compiled from our popular and thorough Product Guides, as well as from you, our customers. They serve to provide you with clear and easy answers that help you in your product selection and shopping process.

Air Purifiers
Should I keep an air purifier running constantly?
During allergy season, it's best to keep it running 24 hours. Obviously, factors such as open windows, pets and smoking will dictate your decision. If these are factors in your home, you will want to run your purifier constantly for maximum effectiveness.
For more information about Air Purifiers, see our product guide.

How loud does an air purifier get?
At its highest level it sounds like a big fan, and at its lowest it’s barely noticeable. This is the recommended level during sleep time.
For more information about Air Purifiers, see our product guide.

Beauty
What are the different illuminations found in mirrors?
Fluorescent illumination produces a cool, outdoor color and less heat than incandescent lighting when in use. Incandescent or halo illumination produces a warm, indoor color and only a limited amount of heat while in use. Some mirror models also have variable illumination settings, which typically include settings for evening, home, office and day light.
For more information about Beauty, see our product guide.

Blankets
In blankets, which weave is the warmest?
A conventional weave blanket is the best for warmth and insulation. Its tightly woven fibers, usually made of synthetic or wool, trap air beneath the blanket against the body.
For more information about Blankets, see our product guide.

What is the difference between a blanket and a throw?
The difference is the size. Blankets are usually sized like comforters: Twin, Full/Queen, etc. Throws typically measure 50" x 60". Some throws "for two" measure 50" x 70".
For more information about Blankets, see our product guide.

How do I care for an electric (automatic) blanket?
Since there is such a wide variety of electric blankets available, refer to the manufacturer’s washing instructions. You might be surprised to find "Machine Wash and Dry" on some of them!
For more information about Blankets, see our product guide.

Blenders
Is the best blender the one with the most settings?
Absolutely not. Some professional type models only have a couple of settings. The best model is the one that best suits your needs.
For more information about Blenders, see our product guide.

What is the pulse feature found on a blender?
The pulse feature provides better control and flexibility when blending, and helps reduce the risk of over-blending.
For more information about Blenders, see our product guide.

Coffee Makers
Will coffee brew as hot in an automatic drip machine as it does in a percolator?
Yes, the heating elements in most automatic drip machines are much improved today and will produce an extremely hot pot of coffee.
For more information about Coffee Makers, see our product guide.

In a coffee maker, how long does a Gold Tone filter last?
Approximately one year, depending on the frequency of use and if you don’t puncture it.
For more information about Coffee Makers, see our product guide.

Cookware
Does the surface of non-stick cookware scratch off?
Better quality cookware will be layered with a more durable non-stick finish, protecting the surface against wear and tear. Nonstick surfaces may be scratched with metal utensils, so try wood or plastic instead.
For more information about Cookware, see our product guide.

In cookware, what is the difference between aluminum and hard-anodized aluminum?
Since pure aluminum is reactive and very porous, it will not be used as a cooking surface. Instead, it is layered between non-reactive metals, most commonly stainless steel. The anodizing process makes aluminum harder, darker, more durable and less reactive to food. Anodized aluminum is non-porous and is a very conductive cooking surface. It won’t chip, peel or crack and can be recognized by its charcoal color.
For more information about Cookware, see our product guide.

Does a heavier pot necessarily mean a better pot?
The better lines of cookware will be heavier. This will always be a good thing. The weightier the pan, the more stable and safe it will be on your stovetop. This is very important, as lightweight pans can warp.
For more information about Cookware, see our product guide.

Cutlery
Do all knives need sharpening?
All straight-edge knives need sharpening, but knives with serrated edges do not. Remember, a dull knife can be more dangerous than a sharp one.
For more information about Cutlery, see our product guide.

If I can’t afford a complete set, do you recommend one knife to start my collection?
The 8" Chef’s knife is perfect for multiple tasks and is arguably the most popular knife in the kitchen.
For more information about Cutlery, see our product guide.

Can you put cutlery in the dishwasher?
This is not recommended. Knives can knock against other items causing nicks in the blades.
For more information about Cutlery, see our product guide.

Dental
Will the higher speed in electric toothbrushes be more painful to my gums?
Some models have an easy start that gently increases the brushing power in the early stages, for those concerned if the high speeds will be painful to their gums. These models lessen the vibration during the first few weeks of use.
For more information about Dental, see our product guide.

Dinnerware
How many place settings should I buy?
The average is eight, since most sets are sold in fours. This may be a good place to mix and match. Buy eight settings of your main pattern and a set of a solid color to complement your main pattern.
For more information about Dinnerware, see our product guide.

Down Comforters
What is down?
To start, down is not feathers. Down is the undercoat of the bird that traps warm air next to the bird’s skin. Ever wonder why the ducks are warm in the winter and cool and comfortable in the summer? Down is the reason. Unlike feathers, down isn’t flat and doesn’t contain that crunchy, uncomfortable quill.
For more information about Down Comforters, see our product guide.

Can I only use a down comforter in the winter?
That’s one of those household myths. Down comforters are for year-round use. Down is natural, lightweight and breathable.
For more information about Down Comforters, see our product guide.

What’s the best way to store a down comforter?
Use a breathable bag to prevent mildew and avoid plastic ones that trap moisture and do not offer any breathability for the comforter.
For more information about Down Comforters, see our product guide.

Duvets
Why do I need to cover my down comforter with a duvet?
It is important to protect your down comforter from dirt, dust and impurities by covering it with a duvet. You will also not have to worry about washing your comforter as often. Instead, your duvet cover can easily be taken off and washed.
For more information about Duvets, see our product guide.

My down comforter keeps slipping inside my duvet, what can I do?
Buy some comforter clips. They are a quick, inexpensive, easy fix. You just turn the duvet inside out and clip the four corners of the comforter down. Turn it right side out and the problem is solved.
For more information about Duvets, see our product guide.

Espresso Machines  Fine China  Fine Crystal Stemware  Fine Flatware  Flatware  Food Processors  Furniture Covers  Glassware  Grooming  Heaters  Humidifiers  Irons  Massagers  Mattress Pads  Pillows

Espresso Machines
Do espresso machines make cappuccino as well?
Yes, espresso is the basic ingredient of cappuccino, just add steamed and frothed milk. A frothing pitcher is essential for this.
For more information about Espresso Machines, see our product guide.

If I'm purchasing an espresso machine, do I need to purchase those little demitasse cups?
You certainly need a few if you’re purchasing a pump machine. With no carafe included, you’ll be brewing right into the cups (and your coffee mug probably won’t fit under the machine). Plus, one shot of espresso fits perfectly into a demitasse cup.
For more information about Espresso Machines, see our product guide.

Fine China
Is all Fine China dishwasher safe?
No. Although most patterns can be safely placed in the dishwasher, there are many that can not. Always check each pattern’s specifications before washing.
For more information about Fine China, see our product guide.

What is the difference between Fine China and Bone China?
Bone China includes a percentage of bone ash in the clay. Bone ash creates a more translucent, whiter ceramic.
For more information about Fine China, see our product guide.

How many place settings do I need?
The number of place settings purchased should coincide with how you entertain. Although eight place settings is a good place to start, twelve will ensure that there is an ample supply for all your gatherings. Remember, better china is not just for the holidays!
For more information about Fine China, see our product guide.

What is a Charger Plate?
A charger plate is larger than the dinner plate, yet smaller than a platter. Most commonly used at a formal table, the charger plate is placed at each place setting and generally removed when the main entrée is served. Therefore, all first courses are placed directly on the charger plate.
For more information about Fine China, see our product guide.

Fine Crystal Stemware
If I am beginning my collection of Crystal Stemware, which pieces should I start with?
The most commonly used pieces include the Wine glass, the “all purpose” Goblet which can be used for both white and red wines, as well as water, the High Ball glass and the Double Old Fashioned glass for your barware. Although there are glasses unique to different types of wine, starting your collection with the above will be a perfect place to start.
For more information about Fine Crystal Stemware, see our product guide.

Why is a red wine glass so much larger than a white wine glass?
Actually, there is more than one style stem intended for red wine and some, like the Burgundy style glass, are oversized. The standard red wine glass is only a couple ounces larger than a regular white wine glass, but the shape is vastly different. Red wine should be served at room temperature. Therefore, it should be held by the bowl to keep the wine at the appropriate temperature. Contrary to red wine, white wine is served chilled and should be held by the stem – its shape prevents the hand from warming the wine.
For more information about Fine Crystal Stemware, see our product guide.

How many glasses do I need?
The number of glasses purchased should coordinate with the number of place settings of Fine China and Flatware you have for your table. Keeping this in mind will help ensure the right number of pieces for all your entertaining needs. It’s always a good idea to buy extra glasses, so if any glasses break, you have a matching one waiting to replace it.
For more information about Fine Crystal Stemware, see our product guide.

Fine Flatware
What is the quality difference between 18/10 and 18/8 stainless steel?
18/10 has a greater percentage of Nickel content, which lends to the luster of the finish. Overall there is not a vast difference in the quality between 18/10 and 18/8 flatware.
For more information about Fine Flatware, see our product guide.

How many place settings do I need?
It is always best to coordinate the number of place settings of flatware to the number of dinnerware settings – this will ensure equal numbers for all your entertaining needs.
For more information about Fine Flatware, see our product guide.

Flatware
Do I have to polish my flatware?
An occasional stainless steel polish couldn’t hurt to maintain its shine.
For more information about Flatware, see our product guide.

Food Processors
If I have a stand mixer, why do I need a food processor?
They are two separate animals. A stand mixer is used primarily for baking things like bread, piecrusts and even homemade whipped cream. The processor is perfect for all your chopping, slicing, pureeing and other labor intensive prep jobs.
For more information about Food Processors, see our product guide.

Furniture Covers
How do I put on my furniture cover?
For instructions on how to put on your furniture cover, please refer to the "use and care" portion of the Furniture Covers product guide.
For more information about Furniture Covers, see our product guide.

How do I remove wrinkles from my furniture cover?
To avoid wrinkles after laundering, just pull the cover out of the dryer once the cycle is complete and immediately place it on the furniture. If your cover gets wrinkled in storage, simply toss the cover into the dryer with a damp washcloth for five minutes at low heat and the wrinkles magically disappear! If the cover is wrinkled while on your furniture, try spraying a mist of water on the cover with a spray bottle and pressing out the wrinkles with your hand. (Do not tumble dry fabrics that have instructions to line dry).
For more information about Furniture Covers, see our product guide.

Can furniture covers be used on leather furniture?
You can cover your leather sofa seat with foam batting underneath the slipcover to prevent the cover from sliding. This can be purchased at any craft store.
For more information about Furniture Covers, see our product guide.

How can I better tuck in my furniture cover?
Save your fingers and try using a wooden spatula or spoon to tuck in excess fabric. Tuck the fabric deep into the crease where the arm meets the back of the furniture and down into where the arm meets the seat cushion.
For more information about Furniture Covers, see our product guide.

Glassware
Why are there different glasses for red and white wine?
Balloon glasses are used for red wine, since that is served at room temperature. The bowl of the glass should be held in your hand. On the contrary white wine is served chilled, and you would hold that glass by the stem so as not to get your warm hands on the bowl holding the wine.
For more information about Glassware, see our product guide.

Grooming
In shavers, what are lotion or gel dispensers?
This is a unique feature in which shaving lotion or gel is dispensed as you shave, to minimize shaving irritation and to give a wet shave feeling.
For more information about Grooming, see our product guide.

In shavers, what is an automatic self clean?
This is a cleaning solution provided with a self cleaning shaver, which is usually alcohol based and is part of a shaving system. It allows for hands-free cleaning without having to dismantle the shaver.
For more information about Grooming, see our product guide.

What is epilation?
Epilation is considered a hair removal system, as opposed to a shaving system. It removes hair at the root, reducing the need for frequent hair removal or shaving.
For more information about Grooming, see our product guide.

What is ionic technology?
In hair dryers, negative ions reduce the size of water droplets on your hair, allowing more water to be absorbed and your hair to dry quicker. Also neutralizes positive charges to reduce "frizzies" caused by static electricity. Leaves hair shinier and softer.
For more information about Grooming, see our product guide.

What is immersion shock protection?
Found on hair dryers, it is a safety plug that protects against electric shock if the dryer falls in water.
For more information about Grooming, see our product guide.

Heaters
I have high ceilings and skylights. Will a space heater be effective in those rooms?
Yes, but look for a heater with vortex action (specific to Vornado products). Vortex action enables the heat to be circulated throughout the room. This would be the perfect solution for those cathedral ceilings and skylights.
For more information about Heaters, see our product guide.

Humidifiers
What’s the difference between a humidifier and a dehumidifier?
A humidifier is used to add moisture to a room. A dehumidifier is used to pull moisture out of the air.
For more information about Humidifiers, see our product guide.

Can I use a cool mist humidifier as a vaporizer?
No, it doesn’t produce steam like the warm mist and thus can not vaporize.
For more information about Humidifiers, see our product guide.

Irons
Can I use tap water in any iron?
It depends on the iron. It is not recommended in models that do not have a self-cleaning or automatic cleaning feature. These features ensure that all calcium and lint deposits are removed.
For more information about Irons, see our product guide.

top

Should I buy a heavy iron?
Actually, the heavier the better. Heavier irons will help get the wrinkles out better, as well as require less manual pressure.
For more information about Irons, see our product guide.

Massagers
In foot spas, what is hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is how water is delivered in foot spas, as bubbling and/or through a water jet to alleviate stress and tension. Hydrotherapy will also maintain the temperature of the water added.
For more information about Massagers, see our product guide.

Mattress Pads
If my mattress is extra deep, which mattress pad should I buy?
You should purchase a guaranteed to fit or "expand-a-grip" style pad. These will fit perfectly.
For more information about Mattress Pads, see our product guide.

Is there a higher end mattress pad?
The best mattress pads are extra thick, guaranteed to fit wrap style. They provide the most comfort for you and the best protection for your mattress...certainly worth the investment.
For more information about Mattress Pads, see our product guide.

Pillows
How long does a pillow last?
With normal use and care a natural fill pillow can last up to 10 years. A synthetic pillow, on the other hand, doesn’t usually exceed a couple of years. Depending on your habits, someone who tosses and turns all night will be harder on his pillow than a gentle sleeper.
For more information about Pillows, see our product guide.

I’m an allergy sufferer, so is it better to use a synthetic pillow?
Absolutely not. You are most likely not allergic to the down but to the dust and dirt in the pillow. Down is the way to go and there is one feature you should look for, a patented process called "hyper clean" that removes any and all dust particles in the down.
For more information about Pillows, see our product guide.

How do I know what level of firmness to get for a pillow?
A new pillow should be selected based on the position you start your night’s sleep. As a rule of thumb it goes like this: medium for back sleepers, firm for side, and soft for stomach. Or just go with whatever gets you through the night.
For more information about Pillows, see our product guide.

Scales  Sheets  Stand Mixers  Tablecloths  Toasters  Towels  Vacuums  Water Filters  Window Treatments

Scales
Which scale is the most accurate?
A Multi Load Cell scale will give you the most accuracy, as it takes its reading from all four corners of the scale.
For more information about Scales, see our product guide.

Sheets
I keep seeing something called "T-sheets?"
These are soft cotton sheets with a Jersey knit weave, similar to a cotton T-shirt. They are a knitted, heavier weight than regular cotton sheets and offer extra softness and great fit.
For more information about Sheets, see our product guide.

What are twin XL sheets?
This is for a slightly longer twin bed, which is commonly found in dorm rooms, so every college freshman needs a set of these! Check the style sheet you are interested in for this specific size.
For more information about Sheets, see our product guide.

Are sheets designed to fit my deep mattress?
Most sheets today will fit a deeper mattress. Check the packaging which lists the depth of the side or states "guaranteed to fit."
For more information about Sheets, see our product guide.

What is combed cotton?
Combing is an extra step during the manufacturing process that reduces the amount of short, uneven fibers in the cotton, leaving the longer and stronger fibers for weaving.
For more information about Sheets, see our product guide.

What sheets will be less pilly?
The worst offender for getting pills (those little annoying balls of worn fabric), are the cotton/polyester blends with a low thread count. Conversely, 100% cotton sheets with a higher thread count will not be as likely to pill.
For more information about Sheets, see our product guide.

Stand Mixers
Do I need to purchase a hand mixer if I have a stand mixer?
Some stand mixers can be used as hand mixers, with the head detaching from the base for the easy mixing of fewer ingredients. However, heavier duty models will not have this feature.
For more information about Stand Mixers, see our product guide.

Can stand mixer bowls go directly into the refrigerator or oven?
It’s fine to place them in the fridge, but they are not meant to go into the oven.
For more information about Stand Mixers, see our product guide.

Tablecloths
Are all tablecloths stain resistant?
No. Though many tablecloths are stain resistant, please read the packaging carefully before spilling anything.
For more information about Tablecloths, see our product guide.

top

Can I use placemats with a tablecloth?
Absolutely, as many patterns come in coordinating styles. However, you can always mix and match both fabric and style for an eclectic look.
For more information about Tablecloths, see our product guide.

Toasters
Can I toast bagels in a regular toaster?
Buy a toaster with wide or extra wide slots. This way you won’t have to squeeze it in or go poking around with your knife to try and pull it out - which we do not recommend.
For more information about Toasters, see our product guide.

Towels
What are fingertip towels?
The smallest towel, used most commonly as a guest hand towel. They are usually embellished or have fringe and are great as a decoration.
For more information about Towels, see our product guide.

Are print towels permanent or can they flake off?
If the pattern is printed on the fibers, then it can eventually flake off. However, jacquard patterns are permanently woven into the towel using different colored fibers.
For more information about Towels, see our product guide.

Vacuums
Will one vacuum fit all my needs in a large home?
For maintenance of your home, it is most efficient to purchase various styles of vacuums. The upright or canister model will be used in your larger main rooms, and keep a sweeper or stick-broom easily accessible for quick clean-ups in the kitchen and bathrooms.
For more information about Vacuums, see our product guide.

If we suffer from allergies can certain vacuums help?
Yes. Look for models with a filtration system, which removes a very high percentage of dust mites and pollen from the carpet. These filters will trap the allergens, so they are not dispersed back into the air in the room.
For more information about Vacuums, see our product guide.

Should I buy an upright or a canister vacuum?
Upright vacuums will always be better for large and wall to wall carpeted areas. Most vacuums today offer a feature to adjust to the surface that you are cleaning, from hardwood to deep pile carpets. The best models will come with attachments and an extra long hose to accommodate all your vacuuming needs. A canister vacuum may be easier to maneuver when cleaning stairs.TEST
For more information about Vacuums, see our product guide.

Water Filters
What contaminants do most water filters remove?
The most basic filters will eliminate bad taste and odor and most lead, copper, asbestos and chlorine. More advanced systems can also filter out lidane and atrazine as well as cryptosporidium and giardia (two harmful bacteria).
For more information about Water Filters, see our product guide.

Are water filters better than buying bottled water?
It can be better if the bottled water itself is poorly filtered, plus it’s more economical and easier to use than lugging back half gallons from the market.
For more information about Water Filters, see our product guide.

Window Treatments
Is there a standard size window?
There really is no "standard" size window. How wide you would like your window to look is left up to your discretion. Since most hardware can be mounted on the outside of the frame, the width of the window can be as wide as you deem fit. Give the illusion of a larger, wider window by positioning your decorative curtain rod above the frame and mount the hardware a few inches wider than the width of the window frame.
For more information about Window Treatments, see our product guide.
